Why do people often vote against their own interests?

The Republicans' shock victory in the election for the US Senate seat in Massachusetts meant the Democrats lost their supermajority in the Senate. This makes it even harder for the Obama administration to get healthcare reform passed in the US.

Political scientist Dr David Runciman looks at why there is often such deep opposition to reforms that appear to be of obvious benefit to voters.

Last year, in a series of "town-hall meetings" across the country, Americans got the chance to debate President Obama's proposed healthcare reforms.

What happened was an explosion of rage and barely suppressed violence.

Polling evidence suggests that the numbers who think the reforms go too far are nearly matched by those who think they do not go far enough.

The linked article misses the obvious reasons why so many are against the dems healthscare scam...

cost
goverment intrusion
loss of current satisfactory choices
federal funding of abortion (even if under the name of "fee" rather than "tax")

... just to name a few.

The author of the article seems to have the typical liberal mindset - "I know what is better for you than you do."

How delusional is it to insist that to oppose Obama's plan is to be against self interest. It is the liberal lie they cling to like Leonardo DiCaprio did to the board the girl floated on in the Titanic. But like Leonardo it will eventually sink to the bottom like everything else Obama is doing.

I love it when leftists (such as the one quoted in the OP) don't get it.

The smug, superior airs they put on, along with the stupid, snide remarks ("barely supressed violence??" please.) simply re-inforce those of us with the position that freedom is a precious commodity, and the government is not welcome to take it away on a whim.

Paul, quote morons like this all you want. They simply remind us that when people with that much wrong in their heads oppose us, we're probably on the right track. Thanks for the encouragement.

To get a really good feel for the answer, one needs to ask black Americans.

They've been voting against their own interests for decades.

Ain't that the everlovin' truth!!!:BangHead:

The libs have done a masterful job in creating a "NEW" plantation to contain the willingly subservient.:tear:

The point of Protestant Christianity is that Jesus wants us to work against our own best (temporal) interests and put the community first.

Yep, MP is a quick draw with the "racism" label.

Surely you aren't serious Paul. Do you actually believe that people are that stupid? It's beginning to become more and more clear that progressives actually believe that the average U.S. citizen is too stupid to manage his or her own life and that more and more government is what is needed whether the dumb masses realize it or not.

Correct answer is "lack of sense!"

However, this article is deceptive.... as its an accusation of a crowd which has none trying to disparage a crowd which has some... It is not meant to change or convict the crowd that uses their sense...... but is instead an argument to encourage the crowd which has already given up on using theirs, to make them feel wiser than they are. But wisdom doesn't come from feelings..... it requires thinking..... something lacking in the OP quote.

You've deluded yourself into thinking you know the mind of progressives, when in actuality your comment proves that you don't have a clue.

All part of the elitist attitude that Obama and his entire administration exhibit.

OK. How does putting one's self-interest first equate to putting the kingdom first?

Progressives care nothing about the common man. They only care about exercising power over a needy electorate. The more needy you can make them the more power you can exercise over them. Progressives seek to hook him on the need for government subsistence programs rather than working to enable him to fend for himself and to exercise the freedom that comes with assuming personal responsibility. Once you have folks suckling from the government teat there's no weaning them off and you have them trapped into a "I need the government" mentality. Power!!! Power!!! Power!!! over the dumb masses who can't and won't assume responsibility for their own life. Let the government do it for me.
