Why Does the POTUS Need 30 Additional Planes When He Travels?

I was listening to NBC news on the incident that involved Mrs. Obama as her plane came in to land the other day.

This is the second time I've heard this reported, and it has to do with the number of planes that are included in the entourage accompanying the POTUS, his wife, or Biden.

Can anyone tell me why there are 30 additional planes traveling with these folks? It seems like a waste of precious fuel, manpower, and financial outlay.

If America is truly hurting financially, why doesn't the POTUS set an example by cutting back on the number of planes used to get him to and from his destination? In fact, why doesn't he travel less, and conduct more business at the White House? It would mean that only those doing business with Obama would have to incur the costs and waste precious fuel?

When, besides the trip to India were there 30 planes accompanying the President?

I've never heard this except for this one trip. Diplomatic trips overseas may require many, many people to go with the President, but on 30 planes? I scarcely can believe it. Do you have a link?

Inside the the US one plane is sufficient and local Secret Service agents are detailed for security duty as are local police agencies.

My kid did get a free trip to Africa while he guarded Mrs. Bush's car which traveled in an otherwise mostly empty USAF C-whatever (17?).
