Why I like religion

Me too, especially considering the positive light James gives to religion in James 1:27.
I was raised as an RC & went to a parochial school taught by the nuns. We had allot of religious instruction & a religion class & a religion book. Looking back, it was all indoctrination to the point they even told/taught us how muddled & wrong our Protestant neighbors were. We however were members of the elite Roman Catholic club & God was on our side.
My father one day pulled the car over to a parking lot & told me the story of Luther. Strange that my dad who always took us to Catholic School & to Church would have told us something that the Catholic Nuns never did. See he was of a long line of non conformist believers. His promise to my mother was that to marry her he had to convert & raise us RC. But the thought of his kids being brainwashed must of bothered him. So thats religion to me....a very odious & manipulative process.
Faith & belief....quite another thing.

The term "religion" has been altered much over the years. It does not mean today as it did a century ago.
Religion is man made and man driven. Christianity on the other hand is following the teachings of Christ and accepting Himself as your Savior.
The trend of today is however that anyone and everyone who goes to church considers themselves a Christian. Even the Jehovah Witnesses refer to themselves as Christians. Go figure.

The dictionary definition of "religion" used to reflect that it was the following of the tenants of an organized institution. But really, someone can be "religious" over a rebuilt 1957 Chevy Belair Convertible.
Over the years the definition has been changed to include everyone and every institution and most all belief's. Only true Christian however accept and follow Jesus.

It is way too broad a statement to say "I like religion." The phrase in itself is not limited to Christianity and left to stand alone encompasses all religions and practices. In fact it mostly is not related to Christianity and in every case except Christianity it is evil so I would not run around saying I like religion. If there are 10,000 religions in the world then there are 9,999 that are evil. More then this even within Christian circles there are certain religious practices that are evil as they are not of the Lord, but man generated.
So for someone to say they have no use or hate religion it is not totally incorrect depending on the context just like saying I like religion is not correct in itself as 99.9% of the time it would be evil. If they say they hate all or anything that has to do with all religion then that would be a problem.
Because of the problem today with words and how they are understood it would be better to say I am against (hate) every religion or religious practice except Christianity and even hate the claim of Christianity when it is corrupted. In other words I have no use for religion except in the case of when Christianity is taught and followed as given in the bible which is done only in spirit and truth. So yes I hate religion except when properly taught and practiced under the teachings of Chrsitianity.

I tend to think the haters of religions are many of the same people who avoid the word Christian and replaced it with "Christ followers." By doing that they are letting the Mormons, etc. claim that word and distort its meaning so that those who read their Bible will think of Mormonism instead of those who genuinely follow Jesus. They help Satan do his work.
In that case, you also need to quit using the word Christian and Christianity too since many false religions claim to be Christians.
True religion.
True Christianity.
True believers.
All in context. I don't quit using the word "happy" to describe my mood when I am happy since some people use it wrong and are "happy" when they are high on crack or drunk on alcohol or have just finished robbing someone and got themselves some nice stolen stuff or money.
We can't keep changing and running away from stuff just because others misuse it. How long until we stop using the name "Jesus" because people use it in vain or they use it under false pretense and we're afraid people will misunderstand?
Quit living in fear and quit trying to please people who will never be pleased. Once they win one battle, they won't be satisfied. They'll go after the next and the next and the next thing you know, you'll have lost all these silly little battles you thought weren't with it, and suddenly wake up one day to realize you're also losing the war.
Maybe we're already there.
There's practically no part of our beliefs today that we aren't compromising on in order not to offend someone somewhere. Even describing our beliefs, we've taken to using extreme caution so even the wording doesn't offend people.
The words offend them because they're offended by the message behind them and always will be until they turn to the one true religion. Once you start changing the words to not offend others, the message starts changing too.
That's just what the opposition wants. Quit giving into it. You can't be on the right side when you're standing in the middle.
Religion kills.. that's why I hate it... it has NOTHING to do with being a true Christ follower which is about a relationship.. not a list of dos and don'ts.... the Pharisees loved religion... Most church goers love religion.. Religion is having a form of Godliness buy denying the power thereof.. . Religion white washes the tomb.. well, you know the rest!...

Well, the Bible doesn't say that religion kills. James 1 speaks of religion that is pure and undefiled so it can't all kill. Religion isn't having a form of godliness but denying it's power - that's people. According to Webster's 1828 dictionary, religion is "Religion, in its most comprehensive sense, includes a belief in the being and perfections of God, in the revelation of his will to man, in man's obligation to obey his commands, in a state of reward and punishment, and in man's accountableness to God; and also true godliness or piety of life, with the practice of all moral duties. It therefore comprehends theology, as a system of doctrines or principles, as well as practical piety; for the practice of moral duties without a belief in a divine lawgiver, and without reference to his will or commands, is not religion."
Honestly Tim, to say that Christianity will take you to hell is scary. Christianity is the faith that Christians follow. We do not follow Hinduism. We do not follow Buddhism. We follow historical Biblical Christianity. To say anything else would be to deny Scripture. We are Christians. Yes, it is about relationship but in that relationship, if we do not follow Christ and become more like Him, then we are not changed by Him.
Gina - I think you are responding to the video that is going around on the internet and I think that Kevin DeYoung has a great response to it - and he also ended up having a great dialogue with the young man who made the video and he clears up some of the issues that are brought up with the video. Mormonism, to me, is not a Christian religion, or religion for that matter. It is a cult and one of the more evil ones. At least if someone is a Buddhist, Muslim, or Hindu, I know exactly where they stand on Jesus Christ. The reason that Mormons are so repulsive and evil, is that they give Jesus Christ a mini-god status, a created being on the same level as Satan, only good. They dress up in their fine clothes, and act like moral giants, but are rotten to the core inside. This is the ultimate wolf in sheep's clothing. Everyone talks about the damage that a Muslim leader or a liberal athiest would do to this country, but would turn right around and vote for a Mormon to lead our nation

...but I prefer to call what I have now a RELATIONSHIP! The reason I prefer to call what I have with Christ, a relationship, and not a religion comes down to the fact that there are many different denominations and beliefs ALL lumped into the institution of religion, and because I do not see eye-to-eye with ALL religions and their many different beliefs, theologies and dogmas, to separate myself from religion and religious zealots, I prefer to maintain that I have been born-again, and therefore, I have a relationship with the Father through the sacrifice of His Son on the cross to forgive my sin and return me to a place where I can experience one-on-one fellowship as a child of the King!
I have no disagreement with the OP's statement. It is just my preference to avoid religions in favor of the special relationship Jesus died to give me through the GRACE of the Father! :thumbs:
