Why is drinking,gambling and not wearing 'christian attire' wrong?

Hi all,

I know my own answers to these questions(at least I think I do) but I came accross this statement from a discussion in the translations forum and wanted to see what your wise answers are.

It used to be in the early 1900's that I couldn't bear my chest whilst swimming. Of course, now that I'm in my late 30's, no one wants to see it anyway .

In and of itself, I don't believe it is. Alcohol is not wrong. Abuse of it is. Of course, that's open to much biblical debate, as demonstrated by those very debates on this board.

Does the Bible list what Christian attire is?No, except to state that man should not dress in a manner to pretend to be a woman, and vice versa. Of course, like the others, this is hotly debatable, and has been done so on this board.

For number three I notcice there is usually not much difference in the dress of those outside the church and those inside. God is interested in every aspect of our lives. He cares about even the smallest of details. We are to be set apart for Him in everything.

1 Samuel 2:16 says that man does judge from outward appearances. When you see someone dressed like a harlot you think that person is a harlot, someone dressed as a policeman, you think that person is a policeman. Somtimes we meet people only for brief encounters.

The bible also says God doesn't judge the outside but the heart, thats the part man knows nothing about someone else, but likes to pretend they do.

Everyone has an opinion. Here is mine. Drinking alcohol (excluding for medicinal purposes) at all I believe is wrong because even if not for Proverbs 20 (Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.) drinking is a bad testimony. It has always been obviously wrong to me. When drunkards get saved they stop drinking completely not just in part. I am a Baptist not a Lutherin. I have never understood how Christians could get alcolic drinks and feel ok with it. I don't know how I could make it through the grocery line without worrying someone I know would see me.
I believe gambling is wrong because it is being a bad steward with what God has given you. And it is also a bad testimony. Could you picture a Chrstian in an ally playing with dice and then try to start witnessing. I have always thought some sins are self-evident. It is obvious some things are just wrong. My dad used to gamble WHEN he was lost. What little I have heard said about it I gather he was pretty good but when he got saved he quit gambling.
Dress is a question we all know sparks a fight. But it shouldn't. I have always liked the Scripture Psalms 119:165 Great peace have they which love Thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
1Timothy 2:9 teaches that a woman should be adorned in modest apparel. I think a man and a woman should dress to please God and not the flesh. There should be no question what we wear is modest. When in church and out of church we ought to dress modestly with our flesh covered. If what you wear shows off flesh and may tempt one to lust than it is not modest. Fashion should not come before modesty. And being modest should not be a problem for any Christian.
I have not said any of this to offend anyone or to start a fight. I am not sorry though for the truth. May God help us to follow Him closer.

Matthew 12:34 ... for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
Jeremiah 17:9 the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
The Scriptures teach what is in the inside is going to come out. So when one sees another doing wrong one may know it is in the heart also. Usually, we do what we want to do. Usually, we make time for what we want to do. If one were to see me cussing or stealing you would think that person does not seem like much of a Christian and rightfully so ,but often times people use the verse you used to try to evade the words of others. As if because of this verse you cannot call my sin "sin" because you can't see my heart. True, but I still see your sin. Actions do speak louder than words.

If the Christian were God's library, what kind of books would we like to lend out?

All things can be right, but are they expedient? Do all things to the glory of God.

Are we being read by the world, and other Christians, they way we intend?

Why do "we" like to live on the edge? Example, when I was young my only brother died as a child. My parents loved him very much. My mother kept some of his things in a chest in the attic. Every now and then I would catch my mother looking through his things. Now many years later while with my family visiting my elderly mother I noticed she still had some of my brothers things. Why? She loved him and although he was gone yeas ago she still loved the memories of him and his things. As Christians we should love the Lord to go the extra mile to please Him! Yet there is so many of us that try to question everything in the Book and live on the edge. Man, I might preach that on Sunday!

From where is the idea that modest has one antonym?-- covered from knees to neck? It has many antonyms... proud, flashy, extravagant, arrogant, ego; and others could easily be thought of. So why doesn't wearing expensive clothes violate this precept of modesty just as much showing thighs and chest? Why doesn't dressing to display character-- like the cowboy image, or to conceal physical imperfections-- violate it? These are for self-image; another antonym of modesty.

Why was alcohol wrong 50 years ago among lost epople, but now is accepted in some Baptist circles?

Where did the morals of 50 years ago come from? Is it true that the lost world had stronger morals 50 years ago than the Baptists of today. Evidence points that this is sad but very true.

3. There is our witness to the lost to consider,there standards for a Christian seems many times to be higher than ours.


Leviticus 20:26 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the LORD am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.

Now I know that we are not bound by the LAW of the above verse but we are to the spirit of the law.

My father in law is lost, there was a christian of many years( a preacher ) that he had a lot of respect for.
This Christian told them that he won some free tokens for a casino in Cherokee NC, he went and now he has lost all respect for the man as a Christian, he will not take the man seriously as a man of God. My father in law said any Christian that would go there and gamble has no buisness telling him anything about God.

Very, very true. I will say, though, that non-Christian relatives of mine have just used the behavior of Christians as an excuse. Holding them to a standard of perfection and continually moving the standard. This enables the non-Christian to ignore his own lack of a relationship with Christ.
