Why Obama Will Have Trouble With McCain

"I've long argued that John McCain will have an easier time taking on Barack Obama than Hillary Clinton has. This is not to say it will be a cake walk. However, the difference is that McCain will have a much easier time drawing a sharper contrast.

Obama has essentially framed the Democratic Primary debate in such a way as to ensure the only obvious contrasts are the ones that favor him. Regarding the contrasts that would favor Hillary, Obama has either neutralized them by saying: "me too!," -- or completely undermined them (for example, Hillary can't say she's more experience than Obama, because he will argue her experience involves voting for war in Iraq, supporting NAFTA, etc.)."

Senator McCain has tied his campaign to President Bush's foreign policy and to President Bush's economic policies. Therefore, Senator McCain will be arguing for, in essence, a third term for President Bush's policies. I think that he is holding a losing hand.

Also, with the 25 year age difference the election will be a generational one the past(Senator McCain) vs. the future(Senator Obama).

I don't know about his economics, but McCain is tying a lot to the success of the surge. McCain can have his cake and eat it too. He can claim opposition to certain elements of the Iraq strategy, yet claim support for what works. Interesting position. But then again, Obama can claim that the surge would've been meaningless had we not gone in the first place - no surge to talk about.

The only trick is Iraq is now down the list of what voters claim to be most concerned about. Both candidates are going to have to roll out convincing economic plans to capture more than just the party faithful

Well, Obama needs some nuances. And McCain said that a while back. It will be interesting to see him fine tune his plan for the General election...well, it will be interesting to see both do this.
