Why Take "Baptist" out of Church Names?

I agree that by attempting to mask yourself that you will be found out. My mother, a staunch Catholic, would not even step foot in any other church ...it would have been perceived by her to be a con job & she would hold against you forever. Id prefer being up front.

Now Annis also correct that the non denominational churches, often those that have moved away appear to be more up to the task.... at least in the NE. Folks the landscape is changing.

 

This verse speaks of those who are ashamed of Christ and His Word, not of those who don't carry a baptist label.
They are two different things, unless one believes only baptists can be true christians.

Though I may disagree with, or fail to understand how they reconcile some of their finer doctrinal beliefs with Scripture, there are those I know who I have little doubt of their walk with Christ.

It seems to me that being Biblical is to be preferred to being baptist.

My use ofthe word baptist was intentional. I was referring to its use as a title. I forgot to put it in italics.

 

How do these non-baptists get to post in a baptist only section of the Baptist Board?

Well, here we are again. I started a thread just like this a few months ago.

I had heard that "Blankety blank Baptist church" (where I used to attend) had decided to change the name to "Blankety blank Community church".

And I still dont like it. If you are in fact a Baptist church...dont hide it under a bushel.

Keep it "real", and USE THE NAME BAPTIST! :thumbs:

In the interest of full disclosure, I declare that I am a baptist in name and belief.

It has been my experience at times, both in churches and with individuals, that some seem to put more emphasis on being baptist than being christian. That notion is what my first post was directed at.

It all goes back to how you answer question...

What religion are you?

Is the answer I am a Chrsitian who attends a Baptist Church, or I am a Baptist?

And believes in the doctrines of grace as my systematic theology (that is constructed thru scripture) :thumbs:..... Christ is my Lord & Savior. :smilewinkgrin: I tend to embellish....just in case.

My late brother-in-law was a Presbyterian for many years. Great student of scripture. When he and his wife traveled, they always looked for a Baptist church to visit. He said he was more likely to hear the Bible preached in a Baptist church.

I understand your reasoning for dropping Baptist. But this question still nags at me. How is this not a marketing decision? I certainly understand a desire to reach the lost, and to try to eliminate barriers. But how is this not deceptive in a way?

I know you've probably dealt with those questions before, and I look forward to hearing your comments on them.

Spurgeon's Church was named "The Metropolitan Tabernacle" if I recall correctly. Many Baptist churches have never carried the name "Baptist" on the sign. There are likely hundreds of "Baptist" churches that have the name on the sign but are no more "Baptist" than Mel Gibson.

I am Baptist-born, Baptist-bred, Baptist-taught,and when I die I'll be Baptist dead- but the necessity of having the moniker "Baptist" tattooed on my forehead or on my church sign is not a hill I am willing to die on.
