There is a false belief that the gift of tongues is the only gift that can be for private use.
This is a Bible study of 1 Corinthians 12:4-14 & 19-21 for why tongues cannot be for private use.
1 Corinthians 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.
Verses 4 & 7 is testifying to all the gifts of the Spirit being manifested to profit the body of Christ overall. Verse 7 is a significant saying because there is no exception given then for any of those manifestations. Confirmation of that rightly dividing the word of truth is later on in this reading.
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
Verses 8-12 all testify to the manifestations in every member to profit the body of Christ.
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
Verse 13 is definitive in that no one can get any gifts by seeking to receive another drink of the One Spirit. That means there is no other baptism of the Holy Ghost with evidence of tongues. That is why that tongue is not God's gift of tongues that is to be interpreted to benefit the body of Christ. It is just gibberish nonsense as being the supernatural tongue found in the world ( Isaiah 8:19 )
The next verse is Paul beginning the reproof that tongues are not for private use in regards to these manifestations of the Holy Spirit.
14 For the body is not one member, but many.... 19 And if they were all one member, where were the body? 20 But now are they many members, yet but one body. 21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
When modern day tongue speakers talk about the many benefits of tongues for private use, that is them saying the same thing as verse 21, they have no need of any other member of the body of Christ. And yet, there are so many different modes of tongues for private use, that they cannot tell what that tongue is doing, being gibberish nonsense, thus making God the author of confusion; which God is not, because He is not the author of that tongue for private use when all things are done to the edifying of the saints in that body of Christ, the assembly of believers.
Modern day tongue speakers are the ones separating themselves from the body of Christ by testifying to another drink of the One Spirit by how they got that tongue, opposing verse 13 above. In effect, they are saying they have something we do not have & so to promote this tongue is by giving another calling & another gospel to seek to receive the Holy Spirit again apart from salvation.
This is of the apostasy that was to be in the latter days as happening more often in the churches than in Paul's days or the early days of the church. Even slain in the spirit & holy laughter movement is of the same evil tree by seeking to receive the Holy Spirit again apart from salvation.
1 Corinthians 12:13 reproves this tongue gained by another drink of the One Spirit as not of Him at all, but from a different fountain & none of the other gifts are gained by having another baptism of the Holy Ghost, so you have to wonder why only tongues is promoted by this other calling?
Proverbs 25:26 A righteous man falling down before the wicked is as a troubled fountain, and a corrupt spring. 27 It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search their own glory is not glory. 28 He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls. ~ KJV
Ever noticed how those that seek this tongue in receiving what they believe is the Holy Spirit again, lose self control & fall back like those "slain in the spirit" phenomenon do? Hence drinking from another fountain.
