This is an opportunity to explore the efficacy of circumcision and baptism in terms of redemption. We could also see if there is any analogy between these doctrines. It would also be interesting to explore how women were saved in the OT.

Better yet, let's explore whether "grace" IS alone if "faith" must accompany it! Or whether "faith" is alone if "grace" is the prerequisite.

Hopefully what I wrote answered your question. In case there was need of some clarifcation, here ya go:

II. Sola Gratia ("Grace Alone"). With the recovery of the sufficiency of Holy Scripture came the recovery of Scripture's message: the gospel of Christ and Him crucified. The Reformers learned and then preached that the only hope anyone has of being saved from his sin and from the wrath that is to come is in the free grace (the unmerited favor) of God alone. The Triune God alone saves sinners, and He is absolutely Sovereign over when and to whom He dispenses His effectual saving grace. Fallen man is powerless and helpless to save himself or to contribute anything to his own salvation.

III. Sola Fide ("Faith Alone"). The saving grace of Almighty God is received by sinners as they exercise faith in the Living Christ alone for their salvation. Yet even this faith is a gift of God's grace to sinful men, so that they have no room to boast. By affirming this truth the Reformers were denying that men are justified before God by their own merits or by an infusion of Christ's righteousness that enabled them to keep God's Law unto salvation. Instead, the Protestants taught that whenever a lost sinner ceases from his works and simply believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted to him for righteousness. From the moment a lost sinner truly believes the righteousness of Jesus Christ Himself is imputed to him because his sin was imputed to Christ upon the cross. Therefore, from that time onward, the believing sinner is eternally justified before God on the basis of Christ's perfect righteousness and finished work on the cross.

IV. Solus Christus ("Christ Alone"). The Reformers affirmed that the only object of saving faith has always been and evermore shall be the Lord Jesus Christ alone. He alone is the way, the truth, and the life; no man can come to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). The saints of the Old Testament were saved by faith in the Messiah who was to come, and the saints of the New Testament are saved by faith in the Messiah who has come and who is soon coming again. There is no other Mediator between God and men, and there is no other name given under heaven by which men must be saved, than the man whose name is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Neither circumcision or baptism has anything to do with being saved, or whether or not you will be in heaven. Jesus said "Ye must be born again", and that's all he told the man who asked what he must do to have eternal life.

I would think that we need to look at the words circumcision and baptism. Christians are really both, we are circumcized with the circumcision without hands when we become Christians, we are also baptized with the HS are we not? Now, the physical circumcision and water baptism are not the same. When we become saved the HS comes to live inside each and every believer, when that happens, a Spiritual Circumcision takes place, this is where the HS cuts the flesh free, we are living in a corpse actually, because some day the flesh will die; but the soul, having been cut free from the flesh will live forever, in a saved sinner the soul will live eternity in heaven, an unsaved sinner will live an eternity in the lake of fire. Much different than the circumcision of the OT which was an outward appearance and a sign of something better to come. Water baptism is usually where a person shows that they have died to their old self, been buried with Christ, are in Christ and resurrected with Him into a new life, saved people get baptised to show they have a newness of life and nothing more. A Spiritual Baptism is where the HS comes to live inside the believer and stays inside the believer. Physical Circumcision when done by most people today is done for health reasons, it is done on the 8th day of life in males, because that is when the body produces the best amount of the K that is needed and helps keep diseases from bacteria down I would think, so that would be the reason for it today; but, it has nothing to do with salvation at all.

In Colossians 2:11-12 Paul seems to think that our spiritual circumcision happens when we are baptized. Interesting.

In him you were also circumcised, in the putting off of the sinful nature, not with a circumcision done by the hands of men but with the circumcision done by Christ, having been buried with him in baptism and raised with him through your faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead.

I am persuaded of the truth of the three solas(II-IV) above. I would add another at #I: sola scriptura. "Faith cometh by hearing, hearing by the Word of God." This basically excludes all commentaries and other things, aka papal bulls which man has conjured the past several millenia.

I have difficulty with the notion that these "sola" teachings were somehow lost until the 16th century when Luther and others tried unsuccessfully to reform the holy see from within. They succeeded in getting excommunicated. They also brought out a number of serious errors. For instance, infant baptism, which leavens to many other errors. They are still choking on what the wine and bread might be at communion.

Jesus said He would build His Church, comfort them, and lead them in all Truth. Are we saying He has not kept His promise? The Truth and The Faith are still out there in the world, but not of the world, preserved by The Holy Spirit.

Salvation is of the Lord. There is no human work which can cleanse our sin nor justify us before God's holiness.
