Republicans are taking a real beating on their racist voter id laws.

A federal judge on Friday struck down a string of Wisconsinvoting restrictions passed by the Republican-led legislature and ordered the state to revamp its voter identification rules, finding that they disenfranchised minority voters.

U.S. District Judge James Peterson, ruling in a legal challenge to the laws by two liberal groups, said he could not overturn the entire voter ID law because a federal appeals court had already found such restrictions to be constitutional.

But Peterson, in his 119-page ruling, said the requirements that Wisconsin voters show either a photo identification or go through a special petition process had unfairly burdened minorities and needed to be reformed or replaced before the November presidential election.

“To put it bluntly, Wisconsin’s strict version of voter ID law is a cure worse than the disease,” the judge wrote.

I wonder how many people come to the polls and say they have no ID, then after voting , hop in their car and drive themselves home

Well, there's still time to rewrite some of these laws, but I think they ought to switch to thumbprints of all voters, absentee voters included.

How difficult do they make delegates to obtain an ID. Do they single out a particular race of a delegate and make it difficult for that person to obtain an ID?

Pence comment is very sophomoric, but then he is a politician.

A photo ID - drivers license, passport, government issued, etc., that's what the DNC required for everyone. Do you think the voter ID laws only apply to blacks?

Crabtownoy wonders if the DNC singles out a particular race of a delegate to make it difficult for that person to obtain an ID. I don't know about the DemocRATs, but Republican states don't do anything to make it more difficult for anyone of any race to obtain an ID.

from the link: "opponents say obtaining the free IDs will still be difficult for potential voters who live far from DPS offices, or who don’t have money to purchase copies of their birth certificates if they don’t already have the document."

1) distance too far - I am sure the county Democratic party will be more than glad to transport people to the DPS

2) $$ for Birth Certificate
Lets assume the charge would be $25
That would be about 5 packs of cancer sticks or Ten bottles of 2-litter soda pop.

Thousands gave of their life to give us the freedom vote.
DONT TELL ME YOU cannot sacrifice a little to obtain the needed paperwork.

Quick search - Dallas County - $23 for a birth certificate-

What part of a "no ID, no voting" law is racist? Where is race mentioned in any of these laws?

Exactly. What all this amounts to is that the Wisconsin Democrats have been trying everything that they could think of to get their people back in office. Do not believe the spin...it is not about race. This is another skirmish in the fight that has been happening since the Republicans took control back from them. The Scott Walker recall a few years ago is probably the most-publicised bit.

It is the details of the law that are racist else the judges would not have made their judgement as they did. Do a bit of research on the Internet and you will understand better why they ruled as they did.

The only racism that I see comes from those who claim that certain races are less capable in their ability to aquire an ID.

Who would say such a mean thing...

On Friday, a federal judge struck down a string of restrictive Wisconsin election laws passed in recent years, finding that they were tailored to benefit the Republicans who enacted them and unfairly disenfranchised minority voters. The decision, a sweeping indictment of the state’s laws, will reset the state’s voting rules four months before a crucial presidential election.

“The Wisconsin experience demonstrates that a preoccupation with mostly phantom election fraud leads to real incidents of disenfranchisement, which undermine rather than enhance confidence in elections, particularly in minority communities,” U.S. District Judge James Petersonwrote.

In his ruling, Peterson wrote that he could not overturn Wisconsin’s entire voter ID law, unlike recent decisions in North Carolina and Texas, as a federal appeals court had already found Wisconsin’s restrictions to be constitutional. However, he ordered that the state quickly issue valid voting credentials to anyone trying to obtain free photo IDs, calling the current system for issuing IDs a “wretched failure” that overwhelmingly cut out black and Hispanic citizens.

“To put it bluntly, Wisconsin’s strict version of voter ID law is a cure worse than the disease,”Peterson wrote in his opinion.

So no commentary describing how the laws were racist, just a statement that they were racist.
