I was concerned about my own parents driving up to see us, they are mid 80/s and frail. A thieving attacker could easily overpower them. If your not armed your an easy mark.
Imagine if the truck driver had shot back, may have lived, but if the black man was killed who knows what they would do.

Did they not charge him with "possession of a firearm of convicted felon"? Or is that not allowed during the murder trial? A murder conviction should be all but automatic if a felon commits such an act. In any case, as a convict, his carrying a firearm should have been considered the only premeditation needed.

SC law is like Ga law, you charge with the highest crime and charge the jury that they can find guilt on a lower level of the crime. You charge with First degree murder, but jury is charged that they can find guilty of second degree or of voluntary manslaughter.

The "possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime" charge may be out, but "a felon in possession of a firearm" charge should stick in any case. However, it may be a separate, federal charge.
