At a church my husband recently pastored, we had teens & young ladies dressing like they should be standing on a street corner. (I'm not exaggerating!) They'd get up to do their 'specials' and sway their hips and wiggle... and... well, it wasn't so special to us. It was grieveous.

My husband & I had been counseling with a woman whose husband was into pornography ( he was a member and regularly attended!), a man with a drinking problem who lusted after women & had reportedly acted inappropriately (he too was an attending member), another couple contemplating divorce, one of his reasons being she never dressed feminine, always looked like a cow hand! Each Sunday, we'd watch different boys and men lust after these young women in their skimpy attire, during our 'worship' services... TRULY, IT WAS SPIRITUAL WARFARE!

Rebellion was so deep, and even though we tried to privately, discreetly, and non-offensively address this with some, it only led to more rebellion! More immodest dress.

When an older man tried to address this with one of the father's he was accused of being a pervert! Go figure!

Yes, where you do you find this commandment that we should dress modestly? Do you have a verse?

    At least for women -

1Ti 2:9-10 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array. But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

I assumed this would be where you came from. There is a lot of controversy about why Paul wrote these words. Some feel he wrote them just to keep peace or to keep the Church in line with the contemporary society. Parts of Paul's letters pick up the tone of the Greek worship etc... Read the rest of that Chapter.

[11] Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.
[12] But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
[13] For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
[14] And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

I won't go to far with this for fear of sounding to radical but by this time man was under the dispensation of grace and was no longer under penalty of the law. So is this really a "command" from GOD or advice from Paul? If you choose the former then we should be just as offended with women preachers, teachers and as Gib pointed out, no flashy jewlery or braids in their hair.

I assume you would have us take all of the New Testament as suggestions instead of instructions on godly living?

If so, why bother using the Bible at all?

    Exactly C4K.

My "wows' were because I am absolutely stunned.

People say "what is this world coming to?"

I say, "honey, whatever that is, it has already arrived. It is here."

Just suggestions, just a cultural thing--yikes, does that mean salvation is too? Sounds like quicksand to me. Again--wow. Advice--what? All this time, I thought it was the Word of God, profitable for doctrine, reproof, instruction in righteousness... So, it is more like "Dear Abby"?

I do not believe that they deserve anything bad that would happen to them. No one does.

    Re: women

Since the topic of end times was broached  I shall respond accordingly.

2 Timothy 4:2-4 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own Lus_ shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Not exactly, I am in a place east of Eden and this side of the promise land. I have but one suggestion to anyone because I am content in the wilderness, a place of humbling and learning. I have come to understand in this thing called Christianity that people pick and choose what to be offended by and what they can accept. One is offended by how somone dresses but say nothing about women preaching. I am having a hard time relating this to my studies and understanding of GOD.

My only suggestion is to Trust GOD. This was Moses' trouble as he went to exit the wilderness, he lost his trust in GOD and showed frustration in front of the congregation. For this he was not allwed to enter the promise land. My hope is this doesn't happen to me.

As for Pauls writtings, the more I read and learn the more the more I question his motive. It is almost as if he wrote what was popular for the crowd at times. Excuse my inquiring ways but I am not trying to trick or offend anybody. I believe whole heartedly in GOD and I believe his word became flesh and dwelt amung us.

Insruction in the ways of GODLY living? I seek the ways of righteousness which does not always fall into Mans view of GODLY living. Jesus was often criticized for the company he kept and the way he lived. They went as far as to call him a wine bibber. When Mary's sister asked her to help in the kitchen Jesus said to let her say with the men. Then Paul writes women to be subordinate. You tell me how to put it all in perspective??? Again, who defines the word, "MODEST"? Is it a popular vote and is there a template somewhere...

PS... It can only be a command if it comes from the King or in this case GOD. Paul wrote several time these are not the words of the LORD but from him. Yes, I don't always understand which parts are from GOD and which are from Paul.

    Re: LaBuick

    LeBuick,

I suggest you leave East Eden. When the Jews left Egypt and they came into the Promised Land the scriptures clearly say they had not been that way before. The fact is they had left Egypt but because of disobedience to God's commands they had never entered into victorious life God had promised them. But when they finally (after 40 years) entered the Promised land it was for the first time and for the first time were going to embrace the victories God had planned for them 40 years prior.

If you are truly saved (forgive me the challenge) then allow me to encourage you come on over to obedience in Christ to the Word of God and experience victorious living.

Get out of Eden it’s not a good place for a believer to be.

    what we deserve!

What each of us deserves is hell, damnation and all that goes with it!

We do not want what we deserve but we plead for God's mercy fo forgive our great sinfulness! That is every living creature deserves such!
If in His great mercy He bestows His grace on us in salvation we should all fall on our faces in humble adoration and gratitude and live from that moment to only praise Him, thank Him and seek ways to please Him and bring glory to His name!

I use that symbolism often to describe where we currently reside. What I mean by that is we are not living in Eden (the perfect place where man did not even have to work) and we have yet to enter the promise land which is heaven and the coming kingdom (again, the perfect place with no more tears etc....). The life we live is between those places and is where I call the wilderness. I do an entire series on spending time in the wilderness. I even talk about coming out of the wilderness and crossing the Jordan. But before one can come out of the wilderness, there are lessons to be learned in the wilderness.

Great things happen in the wilderness for the believer including sufferring, humility, temptation, obedience and most of all, we learn to trust and depend solely on GOD. Jesus went from Baptism to the wilderness. I would like to invite you to join me.

And I appreciate and accept your invitation to follow Christ. I hope to see you more on these boards.

The contrary, Eden is where the believer wants to be. That is where the tree of life is located. The problem is getting past the angel and the flaming sword. So Jesus said, "I am the way..."

It hurts my heart to be in church and have to be on gaurd with my eyes due to the skimpiness of the clothing. I go to church to worship with my spiritual brethern, but most of the time end up having to fight the devil instead!

Thankfully I have a modest wife and daughter. I just wish everyone else in church did...
