No, our pastor rule alone. We have a deacon body, and we will soon have an elder body as well.

well, we all do age and we do get elder bodies.

Funny, how years ago, most Baptist groups recognized two groups: pastors and deacons......This adoption of eldership is a modern convention. Someone suddenly discovered the word elder used in scripture.

How long before we elect bishops?

    Cheers,

    Jim

When our church was smaller, our deacons served our church as both deacon and elder. But as we have gotten larger, this has gotten harder to be able to both serve the physical and spiritual needs of our families. As such, we are hope to have an elder board in place within a year, as well as maintaining our deacon board.

We believe that a church is a company of immersed believers, called out from the world, separated unto the Lord Jesus, voluntarily associated for the ministry of the Word, the mutual edification of its members, the propagation of the faith and the observance of the ordinances. We believe it is a sovereign, independent body, exercising its own divinely awarded gifts, precepts and privileges under the Lordship of Christ, the Great Head of the church. We believe that its officers are pastors and deacons.

This is a copy directly from our statement of beliefs for the Fellowship of Evangelical Baptist Churches in Canada.............Glad to see that we still believe in pastors and deacons as the ONLY offices of the local church.

    Cheers,

    Jim

We're not teaching; we're discussing. We have no authority over anyone here and we're not doing this in a church. :wavey:

Jim, I'd call you a pig but you might not take it as a joke. Which it would have been.

Sag, you might be amazed at how tolerant I am.

Mr. Spurgeon joked about a member of his church who was named Pig. He called him a guinea pig. You might know that a guinea was also a monetary value in England.

    Cheers,

    Jim

No, I didn't at the time. I was in a very serious mood. I realized it later.

In churches where women are not allowed to lead anything they do a lot of neck twisting at home in an effort to see things get done.

Erm....................... this isn't a church.................. it's a forum. And wasn't it Priscilla that pulled some guy aside (as stated in the New Testament) and corrected him cos his doctrines were wrong??????? He was preaching publicly - out in the open, not in church. Say what?????? So with that particular scripture in mind - the answer to your question will probably be "never". How does that grab you?

Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! I am floored with your knowledge. I am glad that you discovered that Paul was addressing an issue in a church, the local church at ephesus where they were experiencing a local problem. Glad that truth finally got through. It took a little rhetoricism to do it.

Remember, I am the one who does not oppose women teachers.

    Cheers,

    Jim

But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over any man in the church setting, but to be in silence. However, she can teach a preacher Scripture, with her husband, outside of the assembly, as long as she refers to it as "counseling".

Acts chapter 18 - Priscilla and Aquilla correct Apollos.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
So does a woman have to a submit to a man -

    a) Who teaches incorrect doctrine (doctrine of demons).
    b) Who is abusive (verbally, emotionally, physically).
    c) Cannot submit to her after she has submitted to him. (The bible teaches mutual submission).
    d) Who cannot serve - because in order to be a good leader, one has to be a good servant.
    e) Who shirks his roles and responsibilities as a man.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Two examples of women leaders in the Bible:
    1) Deborah. Why did God make Deborah a judge? Because the men in her day were very weak and cowardly. "FOR THE LORD SHALL SELL SISERA INTO THE HAND OF A WOMAN...” - Judges 4:9

    2) Daughters of Phillip. They were prophetesses. Acts 21:8-9. But this doesn't mean they took authority in the church.

Goldie, no one is saying that a woman should submit to someone with incorrect doctrine or who is abusive. This is not about blind obedience -- it's an attitude and also that a woman does not have authority over men in the church.

Both examples you bring up were already addressed on this thread.

The example of Deborah is not applicable - that was not a church she was a leader in and she was a special exception. As you point out, she was chosen as a rebuke to the lack of leaders among men. We can't compare that to the church. Also, we have directives in the NT about women. Are you disagreeing with those?

As for the daughters of Phillip, being a prophetess is not being a leader, nor did these women have authority over men in a church. You say this, so I don't know why you bring it up.

Priscilla is always mentioned with her husband; she was not acting independently nor was she taking authority over men in the church.
