There was a news article on TV tonight.

MADD (Mothers against Drunk Drivers are asking you to tie a red ribbon on your Vehicle antenna to bring awareness to drunk driving.

Here in NY State the red ribbons are being passed out by toll collectors on the NY State Thruway.

So would you tie the ribbon on your vehicle?

Why or why not?

I'd tie one on (maybe that's the wrong phrase for a thread about drunk driving)

But sometimes I think people put these symbols on to fool themselves into thinking they are really doing something about an important issue.

and why not?

1. I don't put anything on my truck.
2. I generally do not support any organization, no matter how noble the cause, unless I am certain they do not lobby for causes that are counter to my convictions. MADD may or may not. I honestly don't care to find out.
3. Everyone knows drinking and driving is bad.
4. We have to many laws already.
5. The real solution is to actually enforce the laws we have and hold people accountable.

I already have two symbols on my truck that's enough. The Ford emblem on the front and the stars and stripes on the back and I'm about to change the latter to the Gadsden flag.

Tying or sticking ribbons to various things for the sake of awareness does nothing but make people feel good. Little else is accomplished.

Many other countries have set DWI as .05; Russia and Sweden have a DWI limit of .02

For the record a BAC of .10 would be 1 drop of alcohol for 1,000 drops of blood, so a BAC of .02 would be 1 drop of alcohol for 5,000 drops of blood.
For a 150 lb man, one 12 oz can of beer would roughly give him a BAC of .02

What we need to do is throw the book at these people. Every time I read about someone getting hit for their 3rd, 4th...9th DUI it disgusts me.

There are practical options. Local bats and taverns often work together to cover some cab fairs. A local towing company here has given free rides, and tows, to people through the Christmas and New Years season. The AF base here also has a program for the airmen to get home safe. The base also has a commander who has gotten very tough on alcohol related instances..on and off base.

A fatality from a dui, is just as fatal as one from a hit &runner, and therefore the penalty should be just as severe.
A few long term jail sentences for drivers guilty of a DUI fatality, and the incidence of dui's would greatly diminish methinks!

I have never displayed any bumper stripper or any sticker of any nature on my vehicle.

While I am against Drunk Driving, I am not a mother.

But, I wouldn't just because I am not prone to decorate my car like that.

This.
I have no problem with people who put any symbol on their car for any reason, but they are not really helping anything. It is just as silly as ladies posting their bra color and such on facebook as some crazy means of helping bring awareness to breast cancer. It is just silliness. If you really want to help make a donation to a good charity.

Eggs-acta-tactly. This kind of stuff is slacktivism at its best. It accomplishes nothing but make the person doing it feel a little better.

Agree here and with your other post.

I don't put anything on my vehicle either. Change comes about through action not symbols, token or otherwise.

The greatest symbol on this earth is the cross carried by our Saviour. Yet, it means nothing to the person who simply gives it a glance and keeps right on on driving. How many drunks are going give that ribbon a glance and keep right on driving because it means nothing to them? How many people will do nothing more because they have a piece of ribbon tied to their cars?

Yeah, I agree exactly. Newtown is requesting that folks stop sending dolls and toys to town. They have received hundreds of teddy bears. Do folks really think a teddy bear would make up for a lost child?

Truth is, many of these folks are having to pay for an unexpected funeral, a cash donation would be far more helpful.

This may sound mean, but a lot of this is just feel good stuff. It makes the donor feel good, but really accomplishes nothing.

Exactly

I have a First CAV "license plate". Since NY requires a front and back plate - I have my CAV plate in the side window. To the best of my knowledge no one has ever joined the Army with the First CAV unit of choice option. However, I have had 2 or 3 former CAV members talk to me about the good ole days.
Same thing with Christian bumper stickers. I would say it is very unlikely that someone was saved because of a Christian Bumper sticker - however I have made a comment to someone else about their bumper stickers.

So bottom line - stickers and the like basically only do two things:
1) brings two people together with similar beliefs
2) feel good

I don't generally display anything on my car unless I am forced to- school parking stickers, etc.

I kind of like that term "slacktivism". See a lot of that on FB.
