Would You Vote for Someone You are Commanded not to Eat With?

Donald Trump says he is a Christian.
Donald Trump has been married three times. He has bragged about his sexual conquests.
He is greedy, loves money, and has cheated people out of money.
He has angrily denounced and insulted people.

The Bible says we are associate with someone like this, not to even eat with such a person!

So why are Christians lining up to vote for this man? He check marks all, or nearly all, of the sins listed in 1 Cor. 5:11?

1 Cor 5:11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

Because we're not going to eat with him - we are voting for a leader of the country.

That's why I can't vote for him. ;) I don't believe he has any sort of leadership qualities that would be beneficial in a president.

Yes, but isn't the act of voting for him the definition of associating with him? Which we are commanded not to do!

Excellent response. I agree.

He has one leadership quality that no other candidate has: He is the only one who can beat Hillary. :)

Prior to him entering the race for the white House and showing himself to be an international horse's patooty, could you have supported him based upon what many felt was his business acumen in leading the "Trump Empire"?

I might have voted for Tom Jefferson when he ran (& there's no need for some trite little lesson about voting then) and his contrast with J Adams about expanding federal power, but based scripture I would have refused to eat with him, as in my adult life I've refused to eat with Jews and agnostics.

Yeah, that would be as bad as sharing a drink of water with a Samaritan woman, right?

ITL has posted a reasonable part of scripture which has not yet been given its due consideration on this subject of voting for Trump.

Trump claims to be a Christian however, he has some things in his life that call that into question. I understand that to some it doesn't matter whether or not he is a Christian that will not, in and of itself, not effect your vote.

There is a problem being dismissed here. Regardless of whether or not one will vote for someone other than a Christian that has no bearing on the scripture brought up bu ITL. Since Trump claims to be a Christian but has engaged in the activities listed in the scripture above and, he is yet unrepentant to the best of our knowledge, it places Christians in a place where they have to ask themselves some questions.

1. If we could not fellowship with such a man does God not care of we vote for a man who claims to be a Christian but is living in such open sin?

2. Can you look God in the face and say you are comfortable voting for Trump?

3. Do you understand that because he claims to be a Christian but lives in open sin, that is far different than someone who lives in open sin and does not claim to be a Christian, and as such we have a different responsibility in dealing with Trump?

4. Can we, scripturally, justify compartmentalizing his sinful life style simply because he is not in our individual churches?

5. Would God have us vote for such an immoral man who claims to be a Christian?

6. Does an immoral man who claims to be a Christian becoming a political leader send a bad testimony and hurt the gospel?

I always thought he was a horse's patooty. LOL I couldn't have ever remotely thought that he could lead the country and I was really hoping it was a joke that he was running and then I was beginning to think I was in a nightmare because people actually were saying they liked him and were going to vote for him. I now fully know that not only is this world not my home but this country isn't either. It makes me long for heaven even more.

All Christians are sinners. Last time I checked, there was only one unforgiveable sin. I don't see it on Paul's list as shown above.

The matter of his repentance is between him and God, as far as I know.

I personally never understood why folks thought he was such a great businessman. And he needs to stop designing hotels. I have never seen a more garish display of excess that looks like it's trying too hard to be opulent so that it can impress.

Not to mention again, as I said in a thread a couple or so weeks ago. -He is an AWFUL communicator. When he speaks, it sounds like a very bad SNL skit.

It is real easy to be dismissive but if we are going to vote for him to be President we need to know his character. His repentance, therefore, is our business.

He's also been pretty successful at leading a business with hundreds of employees. Can anyone else in the race say the same?

But we don't, and most of us never will. At least, not like Paul is referring to.

Paul's message in Corinthians is dirested at the members of the church of Corinth to hold their own members accountable. It's not a message to the church of Corinth to hold the members of the church of Thessalonica or Galatia, men they have never met and broken bread with, responsible for sins they have only, at best, second hand knowledge of. They certainly would have no clue, just as you and I don't have about Trump, whether or not those people had repented.

Just as you, nor anyone else I know of, has any idea about Trump's true relationship with God. You're going to have to judge on hearsay, something you are commanded NOT to do.

The application of that passage goes far beyond the church at Corinth. Sure we do by their fruit you shall know them. Just like when we bring someone into our churches as new members. We have to make a judgment as to whether or not they have a relationship with Christ. If they are going to be a politician and claim to be a Christian there sure better be some fruit to show it is real.

However, your attitude among many people is the very reason why we have corrupt and immoral politicians in office.

And your application of scripture to a situation not even remotely similar to how Paul used it has to be the same reasoning that encourages you to judge your brothers on how they vote...if it's different from yours.

We have corrupt and immoral people in office because people are corrupt and immoral. Period. And only God always knows which are which.
