You know, the ones that annoint you with sputum if you've naive enough to sit in the front row when they're behind the pulpit.

I can't handle this type of preaching. I seriously can't understand the words coming out of someone's mouth who is yelling and jumping around, I'm usually too busy COWERING IN FEAR from the big scary yelling person!

If you're a pastor who does this, why do you do it? Do you receive positive responses from it? Are you afraid nobody will pay attention if you don't?

I honestly don't get it. When's the last time YOU had someone yell in your face, and did it truly accomplish anything except to make you angry?

Does this really scare you? My wife and I usually have had two responses while sitting through such garbage:

1. Laughing and snickering

or

2. Walking out if it starts to give us a headache / earache.

I don't know why they do it - but I've even heard old folks say, "If a preacher don't got the hack the Spirit ain't in 'em."

All that yelling ain't fooling me.
A preacher that consistently yells is usually
1.Preaching to themselves.
or
2.Trying to cover their own sin
or
3.Just fooling themselves to thinking that they can preach or even know the Bible
Nevertheless, That style is definitely pretty ineffective. I mean don't get me wrong, there is a time in preaching when yelling is appropiate. But I guarnetee you it isn't everytime a you stand in the pulpit either.

I Thank God, my pastor is a pretty soft spoken man.

I have been in a few churches like this. I would never go to one again. In my experience they usually do not know what they are talking about.

Gina sometimes Pastors just get the holy spirit and just HAVE got to GET IT out.

When we first got our new pastor, He was like this so bad it scared my middle oldest to death (middle oldest of 4) Over the past year he's calmed down some, and WE have livened up a bit.

I'm personally glad at times that he does this. He is getting us MOTO VAITED

I still sit in the back pew cause it still hurts my middle oldest's ears

Joseph yes, it really scares me. I'd prefer someone to come up and hit me rather than yell. Don't even like loud music!
We speak like civilized human beings in our home even if we're angry, so my kids aren't used to it either.

You gotta learn to do one or two things in this case:

1. Learn to laugh and snicker at the doofus...

or

2. Get up and leave.

Both of these strategies have worked real well for my wife and I.

You're wondering what I would say to him if he did? Well, I think it would be something like the following:

1. You're giving me a headache. If you can learn to talk like a normal human being, perhaps I will stay.

2. You are strong on charisma and making noise, but short on love and good theology. Let me know when you reverse that trend and I will come back.

All our pastors have yelled and Bible thumped when the sermon called for it and I much prefer that type sermon to an 'I'm okay, you're okay... everybodys gonna go to heaven...' type sermon.

No hacking, spitting tho. Just loud, spirit filled and Bible thumping.

I love to listen to Tony Evans even tho his voice is high pitched. I had to drive in my car to hear him. We'd take a ride at 3:00 every day just so I could hear him. Nick would scream out 'You preach it Tony!' from hearing me. LOL. I used to listen to Rod Parsley years ago. YIKES!

Hmmmm..... I understand the one today was quite lively and he preached for an HOUR. Jim and I had extended session with 14 4 year olds.

I actually prefer the Jonathon Edwards style of preaching that was short of charisma / yelling, and long on substance and good theology.

Nope, never walked out of a service apart from one, and it was because the pastor was preaching at me, very obviously, using details of what had happened, and without having talked to me about it at all to find out why I had been where I was, simply assumed it was for the wrong reasons. Never did explain since nobody asked, so there's more than likely a church full of people who still think I'm a really bad person. Oh well.

Yep, was wondering what you'd say. I'd be worried about being called out, and about making a bad impression on people who might be visiting, and in general being disrespectful to the church as a whole by leaving.

I have, however, laughed out loud on more than one occasion. Once because the guy banged something and it made me jump ten feet, the other was totally an accident, he said something so theologically wrong I simply reacted, brought the whole service to a halt for a second, just enough time for me to sink down really low in my seat and stare intently at my bible...

Years ago I heard that they used to be taught to preach this way. Don't know if that's true or not, but it never bothers me when it happens. Guess I am used to it and MOST of the time the sermon is a good one. There have been a few though, that made no sense at all and I never went back to their church.

My experience has been that the less meat, the louder the sermon.

I don't like to be yelled at ... anywhere. Much less at church.

I DON"T LIKE YELLING!!! oops...sorry. Guiding someone by yelling is like steering your car with the horn. Monotone is almost equally uninspriring. Speak normal with emotional tones when the context requires it. Be animated enough to illustrate what you are saying but not so animated that you look like you are putting on a show.

My pastor does a lot of stuff. Every Sunday it is loud at some point during the sermon...real loud. Then there is the whistle, or the clapping, or the stomping. Maybe even a stroll up and down the aisle. I have a theory about why preachers do this, but I'll save it for another time.

One thing I have definately noticed in my part of the world is that a large number of people like this kind of preaching. If you don't yell, or perform some crazy antics, then you aren't preaching, just teaching. And in our church great numbers of people have come to watch the preacher burn. They love this stuff, even though there is nothing deep about it: "Hell's hot, heaven's sweet and Jesus saves."

Another thing I've noticed is that once a guy starts doing this, he can't stop. In fact, he just goes deeper and deeper, getting louder and louder trying to outdo his last performance. Because, after all, it is a performance.

If you are living the Christian life with them then you will not yell at them but with them. The fact is that some of them have more wisdom in certain areas than I do. I can't drive them, but walk with God with them. I must live the Christian life with them not just drive them. I can yell at cattle but not people.
