My family has one landline and 4 cell phones. Hubby and I each have prepaid Boost Mobile phones where we pay by the minute/text. My two older daughters have prepaid Virgin Mobile phones where they pay $35 for unlimited texting, unlimited web and 300 minutes a month.

My telephone is a pain in the butt. Especially at dinner time.

We just don't answer it unless it's my in-laws (my FIL is dying of mesothelioma). They can leave a message and we'll call them back.

I usually ignore it, too...though I usually grit my teeth in annoyance whilst it's ringing. Drives Wifey nuts that I presume to be so impolite.;)

I'm sorry about your Father-in-law.

I only got my first cell phone this past November was a year at age 63. I never thought I would give up my land line but after about three or four months I had it disconnected and haven't looked back.

I've told about my approaches to solicitors before, but yesterday I used a new one, rather nonsensical, off the top of my head. I answered the phone, it sounded like a teenage girl who said, "My name's ___; are you having any foundation problems?" I hesitated, then said, "Only with phone solicitors." She just said, "Oh," and disconnected. Maybe the general idea is a good one here-- somehow identify the caller as the problem they assume you have that they can 'help' you with.

My wife and I both have cell phones with unlimited calling and texing. With nine grandchildren and seven great this is so convenient. We find texing is much easier for messages in particular. You can read and respond at your convenience. We are flooded by photos that are great for grand parents. However most of our acquaintances do not text and most have only land lines.
