The guy has quite a history of illegal hunts/kills.

He illegally baited the lion off its protected reservation in order to kill it. Baiting is a felony in Zimbabwe.

African Wildlife Wardens say he and his "guide" tried to destroy Cecil’s collar to destroy the evidence of the illegal killing. The highly visible collar indicated the lion was protected by Zimbabwe law.

They beheaded and skinned the lion and left his carcass on the outskirts of the Hwange national park.

He is a convicted felon for the illegal killing of a black bear in Wisconsin in 2006. He shot a black bear about 40 miles outside the zone where he was licensed to hunt, and then lied about it to a U.S. Fish and Wildlife agent, claiming he shot it in the correct zone.

Not to mention his settling a sexual harassment claim against him in 2009 for $127,500.

And if all that is true then he should be prosecuted. I don't know about extradited. But he should never be able to hunt anywhere again.

Perhaps he could be tried on some American law about violating hunting laws abroad. Or being a moron under our flag.

Given the political situation in Zimbabwe and the strong emotions this incident has caused, I see no way he could get a fair trial in that country. Move it to South Africa or Botswana or some other nearby country if no American laws can be brought to bear. Before locking him up and throwing away the key, the roles of all three participants (landowner, professional hunter, Palmer) need to be sorted out as best as possible, including who knew what, when. Only then could the appropriate penalties be applied to the appropriate people.

He absolutely should be extradited and tried under their court systems.

He's got a long history of this kind of illegal activity and needs to be held up as an example, according to the laws of their nation, as to what happens. Frankly, I wouldn't want to spend a day in a Zimbabwean jail...he's going to spend several years in one. Ignorance of the law or failure to learn the laws isn't an excuse. Never has been, never should be.

His guides should be tried as well to higher penalties. Or they can plead out and stick it to this guy. I have zero compassion for Palmer on this. He isn't a hunter. He's a killer. There's a difference.

He also was caught fishing without a license in Minnesota. In the land of 10,000 lakes, that is a definite no-no, and given his background as an outdoorsman he must have been willingly doing so.

I am sure our sense of justice says send him back. But if you know anything about Zimbabwe - I've been there on mission trips - they have no sense of justice. It is only what the senile dictator Mugabe wants at the time.

I have been to Africa, what this dentist did was not hunting. Lions sleep much of the day and hunt during the night. So finding them in daylight hours is not at all like deer or turkey hunting. But if you care for justice, he will not get it in Zimbabwe.

According to a Huffington Post analysis, Palmer is a legitimate target for extradition because of the principle of dual criminality. In other words, what he did that was illegal in Zimbabwe is also illegal in the United States.
