Is Headcoverings Important?

I think so - both the first and last of halves of 1 Corinthians 11 should apply today (devotional covering and the Lord's supper). I encourage all Christian ladies to wear a hat when praying as a sign of their submission to God's order.

Headcoverings are very important when you are on a construction site where something might fall on your head.

It was also necessary if a lady liked her life in Afghanistan under Taliban rule.

 Saggywoman, what have you done starting this thread? We already went through this in the Fundamentalist forum, I think it was.

So the woman puts her hat on when she prays and takes it off during the sermon and singing?

Headcoverings are wonderfull, you can point at them and assure everybody in the audiance that: "Our church is very strict, conservative and orthodox."
It's amazing what you can get away with afterwards.

What?

mioque, I believe what is being said here is that perhaps some people use a head covering as an occassion of the flesh for a badge of spirituality.

The wearing of hats doesn't change human nature.

1 Peter 3
3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.

Hank,

I think that verse is talking about people wearing fancy clothing, jewelry and faddish styles. I don't think it's condemning people for dressing modestly in accordance with the scriptures, or wearing a headcovering in accordance with the scriptures.

IMO It's a twofold matter of 1) priorities and 2) not putting the horse before the cart.

The flesh can wear a hat but it's still sits on flesh.

Crucify the flesh first then the Spirit will lead.

Matthew 26 ... cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

I have always understood the headcovering of the woman to be the hair. The natural hair, as this is to the glory of the husband, to which his head is to the glory of Christ. It seems to me, that what is being taught, is more that the woman should not shave her hair to be bald, or to be made to look like a man. WE are also told not to make a show of religion, by praying long prayers, and making a big outward showing of it, but to go in our secret place. In other words, God does not want us to show off, or flaunt our faith as this could be insincere. I can see how putting on a hat or covering of some sort, would tend to lead one to do this, as a religious show off. I have not been led to wear a head covering, other than having long hair covering my head.

When I was in Athens this summer, we went to Corinth and looked at ancient Corinth. The headcovering issue was talked about, and it was stated that prostitutes shaved their heads. Many came to know the Lord, and Paul suggested to them to show that there was a change in their lives to grow their hair out. Thus the head covering.

1Co 11:4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
1Co 11:5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
1Co 11:13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
1Co 11:14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
1Co 11:15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
Should a woman cover her hair in church? I guess is depends on how literally you want to follow Paul's instructions to the Corinthians. He clearly taught that they should have their hair covered. Does that apply to today's church? Or was he only addressing the New Testament churches? If he was only addressing them, then how literally should we take his other instructions? How can you tell if his teaching was for the NT church or the church of today?

I agree with SaggyWoman's and DonnA's points as well. Thanks for the info, Saggywoman, about the head shaving. That is what I had heard and read about before.
