Why don't Baptists observe Lent?

Many of the Lenten and Christmas rituals are of Pagan origin which were introduced into and grew up in the early Church of Rome.

So, many Baptists avoid all Christmas and "Easter" ritual (or anything that appears to be ritualistic).

However the Pagan meaning behind these practices has been lost in history (e.g. the Easter egg hunt).

I don't have a dogmatic opinion (and I will eat a chocolate easter egg at home).

To know the Pagan meanings behind the practices, read The Two Babylons, by Alexander Hislop.

It's online : http://www.biblebelievers.com/babylon/

Some baptists observe lent. I don't necessarily, but I do necessarily. I believe at times there are things I need to give up so I practice a Lenton time. It may not be around the time the "church" celebrates it, though.

I love lent. It's the best time of the year to get all of those good all you can eat fish deals at restaurants :)

I was raised in predominately Roman Catholic Baton Rouge-----the public school system was kinda sorta set up to "oblidge" their little observances----no red meat on Fridays in the school cafeteria--no roast beef, no sausage, no chicken----Fridays were Fish Day----this overgrown Southern Baptist boy LIKES fish----thus Fridays were liked, too!!!
