Christian T.V.

I like to wake up super-early on work days (about 4:45am) so I have some time to myself ..

As opposed to watching the depressing early news every morning, I've started scanning channels. I started watching a little bit of the Gospel Music Channel, but I didn't like a lot of the music on there.

I started watching something called "Shepherd's Chapel" on one of the local stations. Seems to be some kind of Bible Study program. Has anybody here seen it? I think the episodes are newer, but they sure do look old .. with the quality and all. They're OK though .. although the one younger guy who's on there seems to act kind of annoying at times when answering viewer's mail.

Has anybody seen this show?

Which brings me to another question .. are there any Christian T.V. shows you all watch?

Doesn't seem to be a lot out there ..

I've seen this program a couple times.

While some of their teachings appear to be biblical (at least as I understand them), they seem to take some unusual positions on some things such as the creation account in Genesis and various aspects of eschatology.

As for other "Christian TN shows," I do watch Charles Stanley, David Jeremiah, and James Robison from time to time.

While Stanley & Robison come on different TV stations, David Jeremiah comes on the CTN ("Christian Television Network") cable station in the Nashville area. Some of the programs on that station are locally produced, but others (like Jeremiah's "Turning Point") apparently are supplied by CTN. (There are other CTN-supplied programs that I don't particularly care for though.)

If there are particular preachers that you enjoy watching, you might want to google their names to see if they have a website and then go to that website to see if they have their TV programs availible in your area.

CoCoJax...

I watch the program sometimes early in the morning as well, just before going to sleep. (I work night shift) It comes on here at 5 AM here.

Arnold Murray is the regular teacher. I dont know who the younger one is. I like the "reading questions and answering them" format a lot. Generally I find the teaching to be good, although I dont always agree.

Regarding what I *watch*, theres not much. I much prefer radio teaching. I listen to...

Charles Stanley
Jack Hayford
Chuck Smith
J Vernon McGee
The Bible Answer Man Call in
People to People call in
Albert Mohler program
The End Time Ministries broadcast

(All of those can be accessed over the internet from their websites if they arent on radio in your area)

From what I understand, *some* of those are also on TV, but I dont know which ones.

Yeah -- Murray is the regular guy. I like him. The other guy who I've seen a lot of lately just always seems so cranky.

The Q&A segment is my favorite part.

They need some new cameras though. I'm pretty sure the digital camera I have that cost about $120+ takes better quality video than that! I know that's besides the point, but still .. c'mon now .. :tonofbricks:

With regard for 'Sheperds Chapel':

I know it well (having lived only 10 miles from it and my friends mother is his secretary). It is a cult that is becoming one of the fast growing out there. No I'm not kidding.

Shepards Chapels denies the diety of Christ, salvation by grace, and the Trinity just to name some doctrines that are not to be compromised. He also holds to what is known as the "serpent seed doctrine". (Satan is Cain's father and Able is Adams).

He is also KJV 1611 version only.

He holds that all non-white races were made on the 6th day and that the white race was made on the 8th. But while all races were said to be 'very good' they were not who God wanted to make His covenant with.

He considers himself God's annointed and no can challenge his views biblically because he is the this ages messenger and prophets. Yet when he prophesied the appearance of the Anti-christ in '81 - he was wrong (which make him a false prophet)

You can find much of this information just by looking on the Internet at sites like:
Let us Reason
CARM (Christian Appologetics and Research Ministries)
Here is some quotes from this site about SC theological views:
Unorthodox

* Denies the Trinity and teaches that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are really three offices held by the one God.
* Denies the existence of eternal Hell.
* Denies physical resurrection of believers. We will be raised spiritually.
* Teaches annihilationism: non-existence after death for sinners.
* Teaches Serpent Seed doctrine: Eve had literal sexual relations with the serpent.
* The offspring of Eve's impregnation resulted in Cain, Satan's offspring (Kenites).
* The Kenites are the tares of the parable of the wheat and the tares in Matt. 13.
* Interracial marriage is wrong.
* Being born again is to enter into this body from a spiritual body of another age.
* America and Britain are the lost tribes of Israel.
* People were alive in a pre-existence.
* There was an earth age prior to Adam where a race of people lived.

Hmmm. Thats interesting. Are you sure you are talking about the same guy?

I'm not a devoted regular viewer, but I watch quite a bit just before hitting the sack and I've never heard him deny any of those sound doctrines...nor teach the "serpent seed" doctrine.

"He is also KJV 1611 version only."

I sure dont agree with the "KJV only" idea, but thats his right if he likes it.

"He holds that all non-white races were made on the 6th day and that the white race was made on the 8th. But while all races were said to be 'very good' they were not who God wanted to make His covenant with."

Thats not good, if he teaches that. Again, though...I've never heard him teach that.

"He considers himself God's annointed and no can challenge his views biblically because he is the this ages messenger and prophets. Yet when he prophesied the appearance of the Anti-christ in '81 - he was wrong (which make him a false prophet)"

Wow. I dont know how I could have missed all of this stuff. Maybe I'm just catching the 1st hour or something, before I drift off to sleep, and all of this stuff comes later.

Either that or their are 2 Arnold Murrays. Are you talking about the Arnold Murray from Gravitt *???* Arkansas?

Yep, without question. As I said, I lived 10 miles for it and my friends mother WAS (she was..) his personal secretary. Not to mention those whom I have met. It becomes a most interesting bible study when people who are listeners to him come into the group. They have some the most messed up understanding of salvation, grace, Christ,ect.. and their being there ends up in one of two ways. You are either a false teacher because you do not line up with him or they stop cold turkey listening to him because scripture (in context) completely refutes his teachings.

I'm not a devoted regular viewer, but I watch quite a bit just before hitting the sack and I've never heard him deny any of those sound doctrines...nor teach the "serpent seed" doctrine.
Have you ever heard him 'teach' those on even on those 'sound doctrines'??

I know for a fact you wont but don't take my word for it, just call, email, write to them to ask about his view on this so you can research it. They will tell you 'no'. As a matter of fact they will not send you anything concerning their beliefs, but will tell you to listen to his broadcasts or look at their VERY vague statement of faith.

Secondly he also condemns the coming together of what he calls 'so called churches' is not scriptural. The telacast is his way to comminicate to his church/group in TV land. They do however get together for a pinic once sometimes twice a year at his special place.
Thats not good, if he teaches that. Again, though...I've never heard him teach that.
Again, have you ever heard him preach on that subject?
He will typically hit it only when he is going through Gen. or when Jesus says that the pharasees were children of Satan, this stems from his belief that Cain (Kenites) was the product of Eve's and Satan s*xual relation and that 'this' is where the part of the Jewish people came from and thus his understanding regarding the wheat (children of Able) and tares (children of Cain) will be sifted to get out God's chosen group who was not tainted with satans seed.

Wow. I dont know how I could have missed all of this stuff. Maybe I'm just catching the 1st hour or something, before I drift off to sleep, and all of this stuff comes later.
How often do you hear Mormons declare that God was once a man just like and that we too can become gods? You don't unless the topic is brought up by the present scriptural passage they correlate to it, or you bring it up. Since Sheperds Chapel will not allow you to bring it up to be discussed you will only hear about it when he comes to places in scripture that he feels deals with it.

Like any other cult, they do not speak often of those views that openly contradict scriptural teachings though they do speak of them when as the need or teaching requires.

Either that or their are 2 Arnold Murrays. Are you talking about the Arnold Murray from Gravitt *???* Arkansas?
No, there are not two Arnold Murrays who telacast as the pastor of Sheperds Chapel out of 'Gravette' Ar. (of which I lived in Sulphur Springs, Ar. about 10 miles North of it - and 5 miles from the Mo. state line)

Allan is right. Please don't listen to Murray or this program! He is a false teacher.

I have a good friend who has relatives caught up in this cult. And it is a cult.

In addition to the 2 excellent links given by Allan, here's more info:

http://www.watchman.org/profile/murraypro.htm

http://www.cultlink.com/sentinel/murray.html

http://www.believersweb.org/view.cfm?ID=1224

He denies the Trinity, hell, the bodily resurrection of believers, teaches the serpent-seed doctrine, and other false teachings. Stay away!

I read the statements on that guys website, and he makes no mention of believing in the Trinity, or hell or anything remotely like hell, the usual things in a fath statement. He also confirms the serpent seed thing. I read one site that showed what he teaches and showed where they got the info in his preaching and writtings, page numbers and all.

I didn't know there were any Christian programs on TV--other than music programs. TV is getting very boring and offensive with the increasing profanity. I've turned off many shows because of God's name being used in vain.

Wow - I'm still learning as a Christian, so I probably wouldn't have picked up on all these things very easily.

That's crazy! How does this guy get on T.V.???

Guess I won't be watching that show anymore!

Wise decision.

Take some advice from an "old" Christian. (an old person as well ). Be very discerning about every thing that calls itself Christian. Compare everything to the word of God and what does not line up, toss out. And don't accept everything you hear as truth, even if it comes from somebody you trust. And be patient with yourself. It takes years to learn. In fact, it takes a lifetime.

Glad you won't be watching it!

Take Amy's advice. Many, many false teachers are on T.V. Being on TV does not mean one's theology is okay. It is best to learn at your own church, in a bible study group, etc. There are some okay people on TV, but you need to check everyone out.

Another thing to watch out for is that the SDA (Seventh Day Adventist) church has TV programs that seem okay but are really vehicles for their teachings or to get you in touch with their church. BUT, they do not advertise as being connected to these programs, although they are. One of these TV shows is Amazing Facts. Some of what is said is fine but the SDA has a lot of heterodox teachings (teachings that are not bibical such as soul sleep, you must worship on Saturday, annihilationism, etc.). It's best to avoid a show that does not fully reveal their theology or connections to certain churches.

Me neither. Although I might watch in order to look for these issues where he appears to be WAY off. I'm sure they will come to the surface.

Thanks, to those of you who posted about him and his program

I know it may not be a "TV show" but, I really enjoy the Adrian Rogers sermons at Lightsource.com. He, as far as I can tell, is doctrinally sound in every aspect and he doesn't mince his words or use the "mystery of the faith" excuse to explain why he ignores parts of the Bible, because he uses all the Bible.

He gets on tv because he has the money to pay for it, those 'christian' channels don't care what a person teaches as long as they have the $$.
Get to know a few good reliable apologetics sites so you have a place to go and check people out. Check more then one, people who've done the hours of studying their works, book, sermons to know what their teaching. Everyone gets caught in this at one time or another, especially when their learning this exists. Now that you know, you'll learn from it on being careful. Thats how we all learn to be careful.
Anyone can claim to be christian, or claim they teach from the bible, but does it line up with true scripture. Many people if they don't hear anything false themselves won't listen to others, they accept anything taught. I've even hard people say, well the verses they read really are in the bible, thats not the problem, yes they'er in the bible, but do they mean what they've claimed they do.
Good for you accepting wise counsel from others.

One is not going to experience the wishy washy doctrine on "The Shepherd's Chapel" TV show. They hide it very well.
