Drinking an alcoholic beverage could land you a job!

Just had a interview at a great company with very professional people. The job was first shift (no weekends) and a decent pay. They told me that sometimes they travel and I may be asked to go on flights. They have company parties and alcohol is there and people will have drinks. I kindly let them know that I do not believe in getting drunk nor wasted, however I would not condemn anyone that did such a thing (at least not on the job) but I would only have a Mikes Hard Lemonade due to the low alcoholic content mixed in with sugar. He seemed happy with that answer and said he was glad I would not condemn them (as I am sure some other Christian whom worked there did) and that I would not be terminated nor not hired on my decision not to get drunk, but he said many at the company valued a good social drink. This was only a 5 minute chat of a 90 minute interview but it was a highlight of the interview.

With so many companies operating like this these days, one has to wonder how the Teetotalist can find a job? If a Teetotalist interviewed for such a job what would he/she do? Would he storm out right then and there in the interview? Yes I am aware that getting drunk is a sin, but I am also aware that Jesus himself hung out with tax collectors and sinners. Jesus turned water into wine, and Jesus hung out with people that drank! No I do not believe entirely in friendship evangelism, however there is a component to it that one needs to practice as a Biblical evangelist and that is that the evangelist is willing and ready to step to the level of the sinner to show him/her care. I have no idea if I will get the job, but I just tried to be honest and show integrity. I am sure that most companies do not wish to hire pharisees these days. No this does not mean a Christian needs to compromise his convictions and fall into sin by getting wasted as such would be a sin. But be willing and ready to hang out with sinners and evangelize. Brother Luke has made a good defense of what I am saying in previous threads that people should heed. Sadly many will not. I just wonder how the Teetotalist is able to work at some companies, spend time with unbelievers at Christmas, and operate in the world. Jesus said we are in the world just not of it (John 17) so this applies to all believers. How can one be the salt and the light if they do not wish to hang out with unbelievers?

Actually that was a 5 minute conversation out of a 90 minute interview. Obviously that was just a side issue. However It was a highlight of the interview. If I had instantly condemned or preached Teetotalism I probably would not have gotten far in the interview.

I’d imagine if you had instantly condemned or preached Teetotalism you probably wouldn’t have gotten far in the interview process regardless of the beliefs of your interviewer (depending, of course, the type of job for which you were applying. It's perhaps a bonus for AA support groups).

I would never work for a beer distribution center again and that was not what this job was about. I am not sure of Winman's motives, but maybe he thinks I am trying to work for a beer factory of which I am not.

evangelist, I'm not quite sure why a discussion would even need to be had on if you would drink or not unless they specifically asked the question.

And talking about condemnation during the middle of an interview is a bit heavy.

You didn't indicate that they were telling you that they expected you to drink, so why volunteer information for which they are not asking?

And they simply are not gonna see any difference between you drinking Mike's or vodka. Alcohol is alcohol. Stop volunteering personal information during your interviews unless they ask specifics.

Where you at the interview? Some employers want to get into one's personal life and business to see if they are a good fit. Check out the book 48 Days to the work you love. Companies usually want to hire the WHOLE person and sometimes need to know what they are other than their performance.

A 90 minute interview is long and it was with 2 people. No one is perfect and I tried to be as honest as I could about my work ethics. However this employer seemed to be more interested in my reliability, dependability, and my personality more so than my experience and skills.

I had a interview Monday and alcohol never came up. The employer was just interested in my skill-set, experience, and ethics. He did not care about my personality, nor my interests.

They generally do not. Most employers will ask questions pertaining to food or coffee once the person is hired and they are having food brought in for everyone. They ask if anyone has any food restrictions or if they cannot eat certain things for relifgious reasons.

It's illegal for a potential employer, with the exception being a church, to ask you "religious stuff" during an interview.

I'd imagine that anyone who believed that drinking, smoking, etc. was wrong and felt obligated to condemn others for the practice would find employment difficult.

Employers ask for time to ask questions. One wants to see if they are a good fit not just for their work experience, and skills, but also their personality. If you disagree check out some good career books.

My last job I had the skills and the experience, however my personality was not a match and I was not a good fit and got let go. In other words I should have taken the warnings I had with that job in the interview. Then the employer told me that this was a cussing environment and they were looking for people that "fit in." My skill-set, nor experience did not mean as much as the ability to fit into that environment.
