That there is funny.

Seriously, though, have you ever noticed that those who preach about having great faith for things of this world (healing, snakes, money trees, etc) don't have much faith that Christ will save them from the penalty of sin?

It's those who are trying to work their way to heaven who believe God is directing them to handle snakes, give all their money to televangelists for a blessing, fall out on the floor by the hand of a fraud, or muster some unknown language.

Many times, it amounts to nothing more than a hope in this life

Its a magic show James....nothing more & there is a sucker born every minute.

Just as the Bible, in the OT, predicted the coming of John the Baptist (who, by the way, never handled snakes, okay ? he caught edible bugs and gathered honey for food, but not snakes) as "the voice" (no apologies to that show of the same title), the Lord, who knew all His works from the beginning, spoke of Paul.
Remember Paul ?
At Malta ?

as for the drinking of poison ? well, lem'see, I'm thinking of........ Rasputin ? whatcha think ?

Snake handling on the rise in Baptist churches

.................................... We haven't yet drunk any deadly poison, but this is scheduled for our fall revival. No volunteers have come forward, but I have faith that they will."

I hope the FBI picks up on this, because here we have the potential of another Heaven's Gate or Jim Jones. seriously.

I think I'd rather handle a snake than to have to deal with a liberal. A snake may kill an occasional crazy pastor but liberals are killing the entire country.

Like this:

Act 28:3-6
3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
4 And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly:but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.

It was for a sign, to those superstitious people.

And for the "if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them" part:

II Kings 4:38-41 The Deadly Stew

When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine in the land. The sons of the prophets were sitting at his feet. He said to his attendant, "Put on the large pot and make stew for the sons of the prophets." One went out to the field to gather herbs and found a wild vine from which he gathered as many wild gourds as his garment would hold. Then he came back and cut them up into the pot of stew, but they were unaware [of what they were]. They served some for the men to eat, but when they ate the stew they cried out, "There's death in the pot, man of God!" And they were unable to eat it. Then Elisha said, "Get some meal." He threw it into the pot and said, "Serve it for the people to eat." And there was nothing bad in the pot.

Or anytime you survive Sister Bessie's tuna surprise casserole at the potluck. Seems the surprise is often Salmonella or E-Coli.

Having read most of the other posts, I just have to ask the obvious question: What did the guy expect? Third generation "snake handler" or not, hasn't anyone ever told him that he, his family and the whole host of nincompoops who "handle snakes" haven't read the passage in Mark 16 correctly?

It says "pick up," as in "drawing up," "raising," to carry away. In other words, "Pick that snake up out of the road and throw him into the ditch so we can pass." No one said to play with the silly thing. They said, "pick it up" and get rid of it.

Bunch of maroons.

This is not a church ...it is a CULT!

(CNN)-- A Kentucky pastor who starred in a reality show about snake-handling in church has died -- of a snakebite.

Jamie Coots died Saturday evening after refusing to be treated, Middleborough police said.

On "Snake Salvation," the ardent Pentecostal believer said that he believed that a passage in the Bible suggests poisonous snakebites will not harm believers as long as they are anointed by God. The practice is illegal in most states, but still goes on, primarily in the rural South.

Sorry, but IMHO, these people are not Biblical World View believers. They have taken scripture out of context, and perverted it to the glory of their own selfish ideals. Like must cults, they have removed selective verses and teaching, and then bent them in ways that would glorify their own ambitions, and they draw others into the freak sideshows, under the false premise of being a church of the most high God!

This cult is no different than the Morons, or even Jim Jones. It is not in line with the Biblical strong, practical, and mainline theologies that true churches of God follow and believe!

I'm sorry the man died, but if you play with snakes, this is bound to happen one day! Will the followers get smart now and find a Bible believing, Bible teaching church? I highly doubt it ... most followers of cult-like religions need the circus side show excitement, and they'll probably see an increase in attendance as the "Look-i-loos" drop by to see who steps in and takes the snake doctors (Jamie Coots) place, and sad to say, a good number will like what they see, and remain ... after all, that is how these church wannabes got their start. People wanting to be entertained while sitting on the edge of the pew, were mezmorised and drawn in, because in society there are always going to be the fringe few!

In my way of thinking, this is a dangerous brand of religion, but most people don't like snakes, so I am pretty sure the attendance at snake charming churches will remain small, and more like a carnival freak show event, after all, the fear of snakes is mighty strong, and most rational thinking folks will figure it out on their own, that this is not a church, as least not the church Jesus called us to build, nearly 2,000 ago!

And that, my fellow board members is the rest of the story based solely on my humble, opinion! :type:

I might handle snakes IF they've had their fangs pulled and given rubber dentures, dead, or knocked old cold as a wedge...and also non-poisonous...

Like people...

I might handle snakes IF they've had their fangs pulled and given rubber dentures, dead, or knocked old cold as a wedge...and also non-poisonous...

....there isn't enough money in the world to get me to touch even a garden snake! Years ago, I took a few hundred junior high kids for a three day retreat in the desert. That night, while sitting around the fire, sharing testimonies and making S'mores, about five or six [and to the kids, adults and myself] sidewinders came into the area where we were gathered, and they were moving at a good clip. That is as close as I want to ever get to a poisonous snake!

BTW- Everybody ran like there was no tomorrow!

He would have been wiser to stick to the "foolishness of preaching."

1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

How about "Physician, heal thy self?"

But should the goverment make it illegal? Under the free practice of religion of the First Amendment?

yes, as this would fall under the mandate that while we are free to exercie our religion, not frre to break the law, as in if we practiced sick kids have to avoid any medical help, that we could sacrifice babies to idols, in this case, can ednager lives, akin to suicide attempts!

I'm not talking about kids.

You said we should not break the law to pratice our religion.
Does that mean that Christians in communist countries should not meet in secret because that is breaking the law of that country?

was adressing our 'constitutional" rights in USA!

IF the law of ANY nation is against the view of God regarding it, always go with God!

People are always taking scripture out of context. Mark 16:18 says, "They (The disciples Jesus was sending out to preach the gospel) shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them."

Back during Jesus' time, traveling was often done on foot. Coming across deadly snakes would have been common. Jesus protected the disciples by making them immune to deadly snake venom. That was meant only for those traveling through the wilderness at that time and preaching the gospel. However, I can't figure out why they would "take up serpents".

That scripture is not meant for today and has nothing to do with handling deadly snakes to prove one's faith. Doing that is not faith, it's foolishness.
