Our resident Pelagian said in another thread that people do not have to sin. He said he has lied hundreds of times but that he did not have to lie any one of those times. He could have gone through life without ever having told a lie.

    So, why didn't he?

Why sin, if you don't have to?

What about now? Now that you certainly know better- why do you sin now?

    An honest man!

Sometimes we sin because it's easier or more comfortable than doing the right thing.

I gave the example of your wife asking if you enjoyed dinner. Perhaps she is a good cook, but tonight she over-boiled those noodles and it was terrible. Are you going to tell your wife the truth? You can, but you risk hurting her feelings, so you tell her it was delicious, which is an outright lie.

You are at break at work. Your fifteen minutes is up and it is time to go back to work. But you are tired because you stayed up late watching that silly movie. You would like to sit there another 5 minutes, no big deal. You are stealing from your employer.

I remember when I was a little kid and ate a whole bag of candy by myself. My Dad asked me point blank if I ate them. I could tell he was angry. I said, NO, I didn't eat them. I lied because I was afraid.

The bad part is my Dad believed me and thought my older brother did it. He got punished and I never said a thing. I did confess to my brother years later.

And as for the Pelagian comment, Luke, like all good Calvinists must make sure all you new Calvinists are terrorized of Pelagians. Keeps you in line.

So why did you do it?

Why didn't you do the right thing in spite of the fact that it is more comfortable and easier to do the wrong thing?

So why let your tired condition drive you to do evil?

Why not do what's right regardless of your tired condition?

Why do you pretend you do not understand? You have done the same thing many times I am sure. I did it for the same reasons you did.

Sometimes we are just tired and it is hard to stand on your feet.

Can you not answer the question?

Why not do right REGARDLESS of the circumstances?

I really think the bottom line is - because we are selfish. Honestly, that's the real reason I can think of for any of the sins that I've done.

    That's the Biblical reason, Ann.

We do what we do because we are what we are.

We sin because we are sinners. The essence of sin nature is selfishness.

No, we are sinners because we sin.

Rom 3:7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?

Being "a sinner" is a legal term like "felon". When you sin you are "judged a sinner".

Nobody is born a bank robber, you must rob a bank to be a bank robber.

Nobody is born a drug addict, you must take drugs to be a drug addict.

You teach the EXACT OPPOSITE of scripture.

Because it shows that Paul's "lie" was the reason he was "judged as a sinner".

Again, being a sinner is a legal term like being "a felon". A person who has only committed a misdemeanor is called a "misdemeanant".

The Jews understood that being "a sinner" was a legal term.

Luk 7:37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,

Luk 7:39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner.

The Jews didn't call everyone "a sinner" like we do. A sinner was someone who had committed serious sins, the way a felon is someone who has committed serious crimes. This woman was a prostitute.

You are not born a sinner. You cannot be born a prostitute. When you commit prostitution, then you are a prostitute and "a sinner". It is a formal legal judgment.

That doesn't have the slightest thing to do with WHY HE SINNED. It only has to do with the fact THAT he sinned and was judged for it.

WHY do you sin? That's the question. Try to stay on topic and try to post relative verses.

We sin because we choose to.

Oh, I know what you believe, you believe we are born with a sin nature that causes us to sin. But scripture easily proves this view is false. Satan was created "perfect", yet he was able to sin. The fallen angels, and Adam and Eve were "very good" (Gen 1:31), yet they were able to sin.

These examples easily prove you do not have to have a sin nature to sin. All you need to sin is free will and a lack of faith in God.

The fact that all men choose to sin does not prove we are born with a sin nature at all.

Romans 3:4 "Yea Let God by true but every man a liar."
    anthrōpos
    Thayer Definition:
    1) a human being, whether male or female
1a) generically, to include all human individuals
1b) to distinguish man from beings of a different order

Every man, or all of mankind is the human race. It infers that man is born with a sin nature. There are no exceptions here. It does not say "except those under the age of accountability."
--Only God is true; all are liars; all are sinners.

I already told you, we choose to sin. I even gave you some examples. We sin because it is easy, we sin because we are afraid...

There are lots of other sins we sin because we enjoy them, like sex, alcohol, or drugs, etc...

The scriptures break sin down into three catagories, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. We even see Satan tempted Jesus with these three kinds of sin.

Mat 4:3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.

This was the lust of the flesh, Jesus was hungry.

Mat 4:5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

This was the pride of life. You are a big shot, God is not going to let you get hurt.

    Mat 4:8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

This was the lust of the eyes. The devil showed Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.

    This is why we sin.

And I asked WHY do we sin when its easy and when we are afraid. And you have not answered.
And I am asking you WHY when we are hungry don't we stand our ground and do what is right like Jesus did?

WHY don't we avoid exalting ourselves when the opportunity presents itself to do so?

    WHY...

You are being silly, those ARE the reasons. Why does a thief steal? Because it is easier to steal someone else's hard earned money than it is to go out and work hard to earn it yourself.

We could, and sometimes we do. There are people that diet because they need to lose weight. It is difficult, but many people fight the urge and stay on their diet and lose weight. It can be done.

    Not everybody does exalt themselves.
