    "Happy Birthday to You'

It is not a psalm, a hymn, or spiritual song. Is it sin?

I will have to look into these and pray about what has been brought up.

Haydn was a good friend of Mozart (who was a wicked man) and they often played together. His tune was used by John Newton for "Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken.'

I don't know for sure that he was not a believer, but if he fellowshipped with a wicked man like Mozart would be acceptable to use his music for God's work?

I am friends with some wicked people that I am trying to win for Christ.

does that mean my work is wicked?

I work with wicked people, does that mean my sermons should not ever be used by someone else?

    faulty logic here.

Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) wrote the music used for "Onward, Christian Soldiers.'

Too bad that the poll doesn't allow for more than one option.

Although I voted Conservative, I do enjoy some of the newer Praise & Worship songs and some of the so-called Southern Gospel songs too.

I play classical music on the piano. (Most of it somewhat simplified, at least according to my workbook.) Some of it was by Mozart. Some by Beethoven, pretty sure. (Though can't think of any specific examples.) Plenty by others. I don't believe I am sinning by doing so.

If music is a clear cut as you claim there is no way that Haydn (I don't think there is any indication he was a believer) should have cooperated in spreading Mozart's wickedness.

If I performed with U2 (sorry, I don't know many rock groups) would you let me come and play in your church?

Is classical music not used for psalms, hymns, or spiritual songs sinful?

    Do you really believe that?

Do you even believe in a musical standard?

If the bible says there is such a thing as Spiritual songs, then doesn't that imply that there are unspiritual songs?

What do you consider to be a spiritual song C4K?
What would be the marks of a spiritual song?

I added a question to my post.

I don't know many rock groups, but if I performed with U2 would you let me play music or let my music be played in your church? This would be the same scenario as Haydn and Mozart (even if Haydn was a believer)

I have asked you several questions that you have yet to answer.

Is it a sin to sing 'Happy Birthday to You?'
Is it a sin to listen to classical music which has not been adapted for songs or hymns or spiritual songs?

    Once again--

What if I were to listen to and/or sing Bicycle Built for Two, Whistle While You Work, or Holly and the Ivy while housecleaning?
    Which I have done.

Unless you want to argue that these are wrong (and with those a whole host of other things you probably very much enjoy), you have no case.

Is 'Amazing Grace will always be my song of praise' set to the tune of "Danny Boy' sinful and worldly?

Are all the secular songs that I sang to my children (and sing to my grandchildren) worldly and sinful.

"I see the moon, the moon sees me. The moon shines on the one I want to see.'

'The eentsy weensty spider went up the water spout..'

Remember Jordan, it was your suggestion that any song not a psalm, and hymn, or a spiritual song was secular and therefore sin.

I did consider it, Jordan. You've brought up virtually nothing that I hadn't considered over and over years ago. Remember, I grew up in the IFB background.
    You're late to the party.

May I point out that I did not get defensive until you began pointing fingers at everyone. Up til that point I felt we were having an honestly fruitful discussion, though we may have agreed on little. Though the other side of the debate was not swayed by your arguments, the discussion brought up specific issues and allowed viewers to consider both sides and come to their own conclusion. The purpose of debate isn't to persuade others to your side, it's to expand your own knowledge and understanding of an issue. Sometimes that may involve changing your position, if the evidence presented is ample enough, but few people change their positions right in the heat of debate.

Y'all ease up a bit. Jordan's been given more than a mouthful to chew on, and y'all keep trying to shove more in. Give him some time to chew on what's in there.

You're right, of course. I've shaken my head at members on this board for this in the past, and here I am participating in it.
    I apologize.

I have to go prepare PowerPoint for the Bible study tonight anyway.
