And what about the American flags that flew over slave ships? Why aren't they considered offensive?

Why aren't you flying a flag with a hammer & sickle?

The official flag of the Ku Klux Klan, as stated by this organization itself, is the flag of the United States of America.

The Aryan Nation also uses the U.S. flag as well as the Christian flag displayed in some Protestant churches.

So. They can claim the US Flag all they want. It's not theirs.

Same goes for the flag of the army of Northern Virginia. It does not belong to racists any more than the American flag does.

The army of Northern Virginia fought against the US and so their flag is just as treasonous as is the confederate flag.

Now one has to ask why all you SNIP are so enamored by a flag or anything else that harkens back to a time when white people enslaved, lynched, hanged, raped and burned Blacks?

Why do you have a cross for your avatar, when a cross is a symbol of the Ku Klux Klan, an evokes a time when Democrats enslaved, lynched, hanged, raped, and burned blacks?

    In your lowly opinion.

No confederate leader was ever tried for treason. With good reason.

Z man said: flag is just as treasonous ...fought against the US

and thus the Americian flag was treasonous from 1776-1783 -
had we lost the Americian Revoulition of 1776 - Washingtion, Jefferson, ect would have been tried for treason.

The last line of the Declaration of Independence": "we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."

To some degree, I agree with this sentiment. Since we should not treat these trivial matters as more important than loving people, we need to let the Confederate battle flag go into the dustbin of history instead of embracing something that was used by the Dixiecrats to oppose the Civil Rights Movement.

1.) why do you assume dishonest motives simply because he has taken a position with which you disagree? He has given scriptural reasons for it and is appealing to the command of Jesus to love both our neighbors and our enemies.

2.) How in the world is he damaging his Christian witness by making an appeal to love others by deferring to those who have very negative associations with the flag? There is ample historical precedent for folks to see the battle flag as symbol of oppression. And to anticipate the response I have already seen in this discussion, the Christian church did not use the cross as a primary symbol for the first couple of hundred years. It would be happy to remove the cross if it was widely associate with oppression, even though it is an element of the gospel message. The battle flag is not part of the Christian message.

Doesn't matter. By your own logic, because evil men misused it for their own purposes and some people find it evocative of racism and oppression, you shouldn't have it as your avatar.

You're the one who opened up that can. Live with it.

Silliness. The flag could only be a treasonous offense if it's flown in opposition to the current flag of the Union. if it was the AMERICAN flag at the time, it couldn't be treasonous.

Jesus on the Cross doesn't matter to you now? If you say so.

Umm nope. The Confederate Flag was the flag of the states who wanted to enslave people in opposition to the flag of the United States that did not. Flying it is treasonous.

The Confederate flag originated with their wickedness.

The Cross originated with Christ so contrary to your weak attempt to make it otherwise, the KKK can't have it.

The Cross upon which Jesus bled and died wasn't on fire.

Consider your foolishness and that can closed.

Good question for you to answer. If the police, who bear and salute the US flag are terrorists, as you claim, killing blacks, what should be do with "old glory?"
