I'm not sure that I'd say "as" the gospel is being presented. I know several who heard the gospel, dismissed it, but God used this "seed" or idea in their lives to at some point draw them to Himself. They point to the time the gospel was presented, but only after wrestling with the gospel (sometimes for years) did they arrive at belief.
The reason that I say regeneration does not happen as the gospel proclamation is being presented is that if this was so then many would have walked away regenerate unbelievers.
I agree with your first point, but I don't think he was saying that all who hear would be regenerate, only that those who are regenerated do so as the gospel is being presented.
I would possibly even agree with both of you, if we could define presentation to include mental review/ memory recall. If God brings the gospel to the forefront of your mind, I see no reason why that couldn't be a regenerating moment.
What I mean is regeneration happens solely through God's word. Ppl can read it and be saved, just ask Lee Strobel. Not everyone who hears the gospel is regenerated, I agree. Not everyone has ears to hear with...these are the ears of the spirit within man.
What I am contending for is this notion ppl are regenerated never even knowing anything about Christ. Ppl in deepest darkest Africa who have never heard of Jesus are not regenerated outta thin air.
I'm tracking now, and I agree. I didn't think SG was saying all who heard would would believe, but I thought he was saying that one is regenerated as the gospel is being presented. And I agree, Stefan, if the presentation includes recalling what had been presented (the gospel).

In therms of visible means I believe that God is a God of means and, as Spurgeon suggested, most often the means God uses is persuasion....a truth communicated to us and received in such a way as it has not before.
But to go directly to the heart of the matter, I suppose I'd turn to Ezekiel 36. Conversion is the supernatural act of God where He drew me to Himself. I was dead in my sin and God gave me a new heart and a new spirit. God put His Spirit in me.

Ppl who are anti-gospel regeneration love to use Abram as an example of God regenerating ppl outside the gospel, but God spoke verbally to him, so I don't think that dog will hunt.

I see where folks are proclaiming regeneration occurs when the gospel is received. Hogwash. There is no support anywhere in scripture for this utterly bogus assertion. Regeneration only occurs after a person is transferred by God spiritually into Christ.

There is support in so many passages of Scripture that are the exact opposite of what you teach that it makes your above diatribe remarkably absurd. I'd say your above statement is slanderous if I were to employ your own standards. But I'll pass.

And thereby was exalted the the right hand of God and received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, which he shed on us: Acts 2:33 “Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit,He poured out this which you now see and hear.
