Donald Trump is suddenly looking like a very weak autocrat

This has become a pattern, in which Trump deals with setbacks by lashing out at other institutions, including ones that can function as a check on his power. When the courts blocked his immigration ban, he blasted both the courts and the news media for making us less safe, in what seemed to be designed to lay the groundwork to blame them for a future terrorist attack, a move that even some Republicans criticized for its authoritarian tendencies. This appeared to be a test run of sorts, in which Trump was experimenting with how far he could go in delegitimizing the institutions that might act as a check on his power later.

[The Flynn crisis paralyzes the White House]

But as a test run, for now, at least, it is failing. Trump’s unchecked antics on multiple fronts are suddenly making him look like a very weak autocrat wannabe.

I think it's making him look like what he is--a businessman not accustomed to dealing with opposition from within. In his own business, he had essentially absolute power. He has a lot of power now, but it's far from absolute (thanks to the Founding Fathers!).

This current scandal will probably blow over (unless we get a major surprise), and things will continue on. Trump knows how to create chaos and distractions, and eventually we won't be talking about this so much.

I wouldn't say it's impossible for him to be taken down. Republicans could eventually get fed up with him if he doesn't listen to their concerns, and establishment Republicans know that Pence is waiting in the wings.

This is just a guess, but I imagine that 60% or more of the Republicans in Congress would rather have Pence as President than Trump. They won't impeach/convict without cause, but if Trump gives them cause, they might go along with impeachment proceedings.

Do I think impeachment is likely? Not really. But I do think it is possible. Even so, we would need a lot more than what we have right now to even consider that option.

Stefan, I'm wondering if in reality these "Republicans in Congress" aren't enjoying the show of Trump just sailing on through uninjured by the impotent pile-on onslaught of the "progressive" liberals.

Also I believe their desperation is saying a lot more to traditional JFK Democrats about themselves ("progressives") than their fabrications about Trump.

Why? Because they have thrown off their masks identifying themselves on in a frontal attack all over the marxist national news against president Trump telling incredulous lies about the president.

They have cried wolf a multitude of times trying to get something to stick.
Nothing has - actually no one believes them anymore.

Their worst crime: committing the high crime of treason by leaking classified audio recordings of private phone calls between US government officials.

It's not that no one believes his detractors. His supporters don't believe them, but his opponents do.

Echo chambers exist on both ends of the political spectrum.

Yes, just wondering out loud - how many house Democrats are with him?

As I have suspected all along - Trump is actually a Blue Dog Democrat (he always was) who needed to distance himself from the DNC - Soros and others have hijacked and betrayed the JFK Democratic Party.

Where are the JFK Democrats today? Why are today’s Democrats pushing for higher taxes on job creators? Simply because the Democrats today see money as belonging to the federal government. Democrats, in large part, believe that people who have more than is absolutely (sustainably) necessary are stealing from the federal government. Liberal Democrats have hijacked a great political party to push our nation from liberty to Utopian tyranny.

It's completely right for Trump to criticize lawless court rulings and liberal media bias. That criticism is light being cast on roaches.

Checks and balances of Govt.

So keep in mind - if the SC were to overrule Roe-vs Wade - expect President Chelsea Clinton to criticize the SC.

Interesting that you use the term "roaches". That is hate speech.

One level of hate speech is: Did the speech describe the victims-to-be as other than human, e.g. as vermin, pests, insects or animals?

Late-night alleged comedy has been reduced to nothing but anti-Trump hate speech. The Left is a putrid cauldron of hate, a basket of deplorables, if you will.

Crabtownboy, how is it the 9th Circus court didn't ignore the law in its ruling against Trump? And, why should they be above criticism?

How about a basket of irredeemable deplorables?

Not as bad Hank, but not good either. They are citizens with a different opinion. Debate them rationally and they may change ... or they may not change. Maybe you will change .... maybe you will not change. But be polite and discuss logically and rationally, not emotionally and irrationally.

Don't know about late night comedy. I never watch it.

Your comment about the let is simply your opinion. I expect some on the left are small enough to same thing about you. I would not use such language.

Crabtownboy, how is it the 9th Circus court didn't ignore the law in its ruling against Trump? And, why should they be above criticism?

You say the 9th Circuit Court did not ignore the law. I agree with you. They took the law into consideration and they took the government's argument into consideration and decided the government had not proven its case. I agree. I watched the proceedings and felt the government has a very weak argument. When the government basically said we have no proof you just have to trust us. Well, that just will not carry any weight in any court.

They, the court, is not above criticism. But they should not be slandered.

Pres Trump is not an autocrat, and autocrats are by definition not "Weak". They hold absolute power.

This headline is weak.

Chelsea Clinton will never be president! The nation has had it with the Clinton's corrupt ways and Americans will endure no more of them! The liberals hate anything that even closely resembles morality, they're evil to the core and will do anything within their power to continue to corrupt this nation! My prayer is that Christ returns soon!
