I don't care if you drink or not. Your consistency here hints at a deeper issue than having a glass of wine.

Is there a reason you divert to legalism when it comes to alcohol?

Well, for one thing, I am not forcing my view on anyone. What I am presenting is simply my own view, and that is a position you are not going to be able to debate very well.

The primary reason people drink is to alter their mind. If you deny that then you can present reasons why people would feel the need to drink alcohol.

You say you "fight against teetotalism" which is odd: why would you fight against something that makes a person better off? Why look for excuses (and that is what you have presented) to drink alcohol? Do you drink because it is medicinal? Because it just tastes so good?

So how about drugs? Marijuana is arguably medicinal. Do you fight against my own view that no-one should smoke pot as well?

While there are people who can take a drink once in a while, for every one of them there are probably ten people who succumb to the horrors of addiction, and that, my friend...is what you are basically fighting for.

And it has no place in a Christian setting, despite what RC Sproul, or his son, have to say. He is also wrong in his eschatology, by the way.

    ;)

    God bless.

Let's see what he has to say there:

    Proverbs 31

    King James Version (KJV)

4 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink:

5 Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted.

6 Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts.

7 Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

The broader context does make for a ringing endorsement of of drinking wine and strong drink. Those who are said that they should be given strong drink are in more dire circumstances, which would seem to limit the circumstances the Psalmist endorses wine and strong drink.

And I would suggest to you that, as a Kingdom of Priests, we stand in a far graver position than that of a King.

So what are the other many passages? I'd like to take a look at them.

    God bless.

This thread is an example. You are a legalist when it comes to drinking alcohol. You throw out principle and doctrine to use Scripture to justify your desire. Legalism is legalism (not just when in opposition). You are a legalist.

    Did God create marijuana? Opium?

I am not arguing against alcohol (as I have said over and over again). Unlike you, I have not adopted legalism. Perhaps this is why my comments escape you. The issue is not drinking, but your attempt to use Scripture to justify doing what you want.

Not true not true. I am just preaching the truth about alcohol learning from the books I am reading.

    Here is what I said:

If I said "The Primary reason people bowl is because they enjoy the sport" is that the same as saying everyone bowls because they enjoy the sport?

Altering the mind is the primary reason. Deny it if you like.

And I see no difference in using alcohol to alter one's mind than using drugs. Basically the same result occurs.

The fact is that there are far more pleasant beverages out there that one can enjoy without the side effects of alcohol. There are medicines one can take in place of alcohol. I will admit I do think there is a medicinal application for alcohol, and I have on occasion indulged in using...Nyquil.

    Rather than a toddy, lol.

And I just have to ask one question: have you shown how exactly one can glorify God through alcohol use in this thread? Could you give me a post#?

    God bless.

What a stupid thing to say. Is this your way of saying something as an insult when you cannot answer a charge (childishness)? Do you realize the comment is less an insult and more an admission of defeat on your part?

To correct your ignorance, I am a member of this forum addressing your taking of God's name in vain by trying to justify your lusts...the things you do "for fun"... as being done for God's glory. And you reply as a child.

It's still a wild assumption that you made. Admit it!

As I have said many times alcohol is one of Gods gifts to his people.

Then why call me a name? You called me a legalist. I am not taking Gods name in vain. Prove it!

You have adopted legalism. There is no way around that, brother. You are looking to the "letter of the law" to justify your actions rather than whether not God is actually glorified in your drinking. This is legalism as much as those who look to the "letter of the law" to forbid alcohol is legalism. You are what you pretend to argue against. And what you end up arguing for is not Christ but alcohol. Is that not foolish?

Out at Texas Roadhouse and as usual I ordered no alcohol. If I was such a legalist why would I do this?

I did not call you a name. I said you were a legalist because you are. That is not a name but a description of the way you interpret things. You did the name calling, but calling people gremlins is a pretty stupid thing for an adult to call another. Surely you are not so childish not to recognize that, at least.

When we use God's name casually (for example, if I were to say I watched a movie I really wanted to see "for God's glory", or if I say that I drink "to the glory of God", when in fact I watch the movie or drink because I want to watch the movie or drink). It is my experience that Christians take God's name in vain much more severely than do non-Christians.

And that is exactly what you did. You said that you drank "to the glory of God" because you found drinking fun.

I don't want to come off harsh, either. My point was not directed against alcohol but towards what it means to do something "for the glory of God". The passage you quoted comes from Paul's instruction about food and drink offered to idols. The point was about glorifying God in such a way that people believe and are saved (read the passage you provide). I don't mind you drinking at all. My objection was the pretense that it was for God's glory that you drank for the fun of it.
