21st Century King James Version (KJ21)

I ran across this version when looking for English Bibles that do not/may not include the titles/superscriptions with the Psalms. (Based on the lookup I did at Bible Gateway, this version does not include the superscriptions.)

Just wondering if any of you know about the history of this updated KJ21 -- who is responsible for it, etc.?

The 1994 21st Century King James Version was published and copyrighted by 21st Century King James Bible Publishers, a division of Deuel Enterprises of Gary, South Dakota. The president of this publisher was William D. Prindle. It would also be associated with Third Millennium Publications, also a division of Deuel Enterprises, which published the 1998 Third Millennium Bible. www.tmbible.com

Some of the Psalms in the 1994 KJ21 may include titles/superscriptions.

For example, Psalm 88 in it has
"A prayer containing a grievous complaint"
and underneath it has:
"A song of Psalm for the sons of Korah. To the chief musician. Upon Mahalath Leannoth. A Psalm of Herman the Ezrahite, giving instructions."

My understanding is that it primarily replaces archaic words with modern ones. It retains thee and thou and even the "eth" endings of verbs. Its modernization is not exhaustive because it retains a number of words that, though not archaic, are not in common use. KJV-only folks reject it because it's not the KJV. It might be helpful or those who like the KJV but scratch their heads at some of the words. Pretty much a niche publication.

I am thinking I remember something about a guy last name Green who was working on something like this several years ago, but haven't found such a name in any searches on KJ21. Maybe my memory is wrong.

I wondered if these were actually left out, put in a marginal reading, or just left out of what is available to see on Bible Gateway. I don't know how complete all the Bible versions on there are.

Jay Green was not involved with the making of the 1994 21st Century King James Version although he did produce several other updated or revised editions of the KJV [1962 Children's Version, 1962 Teen-age Version, 1971 King James II, 1990 Modern King James Version, KJ3].

William D. Prindle was evidently the editor or chief editor of the 1994 KJ21 although he may have been assisted by three other people.

Jay's most well known contribution was his 4 volume Hebrew/Greek interlinear with the Hebrew/Greek, the KJV text, keyed to Strong's numbers, and his own literal translation (now available as the LITV) which is very close to the KJ3.

His own works are still available through his Sovereign Grace Publications (Jay died in 2008) but his 4 volume interlinear is now owned (as part of a law suit settlement) by Hendrickson Publishers and is still in print.

I can't answer for what Jay Green was thinking, but from the Wikipedia link it looks like much of his translation work and publications were prior to the NKJV.

I notice he has A Concise Lexicon to the Biblical Languages with Maurice Robinson.

This seems to be a pretty good work. Occasionally when I see split reading in translations, I reference his English transaltion. It is also the only copy the Hebrew I have. So use it frequently when studying the OT, when i want to see the Hebrew word used.

Hendrickson also produces a single volume addition as well. Or they did...i have the single volume edition.

Green rejected the NKJV in favor us his own translations. In his later work, some folks considered Green to have been an adherent of "Jay Green Onlyism."

My eyes are not up to the super small print any more.

It is print small print. At times I have a hard time reading the Strongs #'s. The print is so small the ink bleed into the next number or within the number its self. The words are readable for me. But I definitely understand your concern. The day will come when I will be using a magnifying glass on it

I had a 20 volume Oxford English Dictionary that had been reduced to two (large) volumes, 4 pages per page.

I got so I couldn't read it without a magnifying glass. The joys of getting old. Which, I suppose, is better than the alternative.
