"War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it; the crueler it is, the sooner it will be over."

Yes and the Germans bombed us too. Neither ended the war: only the defeat of the German army did. So, no, not ignorant

The english have always been "racist" against the Irish, but now they go back decades to condemn their terrorist reactions and defend those who openly want to force sharia law on the country. Ain't this tasty?

Greatest general in US history. I wish he had been on the right side. Regardless, I acknowledge greatness.

Study history a bit better. You might then see that the will of the people was crushed well in advance of surrender.

Yes because we have belatedly tried to learn from our mistakes, atone for our past sins and be less crappy towards other races

    Patronising, much?

Anyway, that didn't cause the surrender; the German people didn't surrender to the Allies, the German Army did, when it was finally beaten in the field.

Hitler had held the army together through his iron fist totalitarian rule. The will of the people had been broken. The war was over long before the armies surrendered. Had the will of the people not been broken, occupying Germany and Japan would have been a futile exercise even after the surrender of the army.
Was the RAF targeting civilians murder?

Hitler thought nothing of bombing London and the Germans bombed Guernica in 1937 in Spain.

Yes, but I don't think we should be taking lessons in morality from or measuring our ethical standards according to Hitler and the Nazis, do you?

"The Nazis did it so that makes it OK" is scarcely a good starting point for a discussion on situation ethics eg: Holocaust, anyone? This is kind of the point I'm driving at: the 'moral justification' put forward by some here for targeting civilians seems perilously close to the concept of 'total war' advocated by the likes of Goebbels -- with the resulting mass murder that ensued. As Christians - heck, as people who claim to be civilised - we have to do better than that.

Perhaps, but there is a fog of war. By your logic, wouldn't FDR and HST be war criminals? It is absurd to claim that German atrocities or Russian atrocities, for example, can be used to excuse the horror of war. I used the examples of German bombing of London by both airplanes and rockets as well as the ruthless bombing of Guernica, Spain, by the Germans in 1937, as evidence of what war has been like since Adam six thousand years ago.

Cuba has long wanted to attack New York with atomic bombs. Now North Korea wants to use atomic weapons against the USA and other Asian countries allied with the West. Also. Iran wants to use atomic bombs against Israel and some of the Arab nations and Paris and the USA.

Thank God for Theresa May, who is pro-American, unlike members of Labour like you. American William Katz of the Urgent Agenda blog says, "Corbyn is a nightmare, an old-style British Marxist, who has led Labour back to the hard anti-American left." Matt, aren't you hard anti-American left?

Hosea 7:11 Ephraim also is like a silly dove......
and Deuteronomy 17:15..... the mayor is a "stranger". God, I wish the Queen would step up. I know she is meek, but there's a limit. It's all in your bibles folks. I knew this would happen by my bible.

I fully advocate total warfare as advocated by W.T. Sherman.

    Quite possibly; Churchill too
Then why did you juxtapose them in a discussion on the morality of our bombing of Germany?

How is any of this relevant to a discussion about the bombing of civilians in WW2?

I'm not a member of the Labour Party, so your assertion is inaccurate
Nope: firstly, I'm not 'hard-left' and disagree with Corbyn on some issue; I am more akin to a European-style Social Democrat with some Attlee-an 'Welfare Statism' thorwn in. Secondly, I am not anti-American, just largely in powerful disagreement with the proportion of the population who voted for the current POTUS

    Seriously? As a Christian?

    Wow. Just wow.

How about Goebbels - do you also subscribe to his vision of Total War as advocated in the Sportpalast speech?

It has been a long time since I read the speech. I will say Sherman had it right. War is cruelty. The more cruel you make it, the sooner it will end. Far less wars will be fought under Sherman Doctrine. We either go all in or we stay out. In the big picture, total warfare is more humane than long, drawn out wars.
