Matt, for good or ill thanks to the refugees from the Potato Famine, the default American position is a Fenian one.
As the son of an Irish immigrant (my dad came to the US in 1924) I was taught quite early that all people have a natural right to independence, and that this right could only be won and maintained by the armed defense of liberty. And I have passed that basic truth to my children and they have passed it on to my grandchildren.

Same with the IRA for us
Exactly. Terrorism is war. It is to be looked at as war. In war, there is my side and the wrong side. In actuality, both sides share blame. It might be split 99% to 1%, but both sides share blame. Terrorism is an act of war. In my mind, all is fair in love and war. Fight to win or don't fight.

When you kill civilians, you cross a line, whatever your cause is.
No. Armies are merely an arm of the civilian populous. You win wars by breaking the will of the populous to fight. As long as they desire to fight, they will continue to field an army. Defeating armies among the battlefield dies not win wars.

Military organizations have one purpose. To kill people and break things. The side that kills the most people and breaks the most things wins.

Lord Mountbatten--there was a man! Murdered by terrorists.
I am of the opinion that incident was the beginning of the downfall of the IRA.

Lord Louis was very well thought of, not just in Great Britain, but in most of the western world. And the atrocity of the act included the death of his 14 year old grandson, Nicholas, and a 15 year old boat boy, Paul Maxwell.

That pretty much ended the IRA.

Seemed to work in Germany in 1918 and 1945....

Deliberately targeting civilians is murder.

That was wrong, and Dresden was a war crime: it had no military value and was crammed with refugees.

Are you that ignorant of history? The RAF blatently targeted civilians. Ww2 took the war to the populous. Had WW1 broken the will of the people there would have been no WW2. WW2 was the conclusion of WW1.
