There are conflicting reports - one of Dr Ford's friends said that the incident was talked about for the following day(s) at school - however Dr Ford said it happened at a summer party when school was out.

Why not bring any of this up when he was first appointed on the other court?

Maybe because it hadn't happened yet.

    Think about that.

Look into something called Jesuit Casuistry

Wikipedia is not too bad for this :

Just the timing is political (not necessarily on behalf of the victim of the assault, if it occurred, but by the Democrats). I think it more likely that her report stems from the "me too movement" and the Democrats strategically sat on it until now.

    Just curious....

Would you agree that IF he is guilty then justice itself would demand he be punished even if it occurred 35 years ago (with the statute of limitations preventing criminal charges, if he is guilty then does not this stand in the way of true justice)?

What exactly did he do though? IF guilty, it was for kissing her, and fondeling her, but NO sex? When both had drank, and at a party? What exactly would legally be the crime?

It is illegal to fondle women against their will, to cover their mouth when they try to scream, try to remove their clothes.....it's either sexual assault or attempted rape (even if both parties had been drinking). So IF guilty it is for sexual assault or attempted rape (which can't be prosecuted due to the length of time which has passed).

She has no credible evidence that I have seen though yet, and seems to just be a way to get the proceedings delayed until mid term elections, as the Dems hope to take control back and kicked him off the SC!

Republicans make counter offer to Ford.

Meeting will take place on Wednesday, not Thursday, as Ford requested.

Ford will go first, then Kavanaugh. Not Kavanaugh first, then Ford.

Republicans will use outside counsel for questioning Ford, not Senators only as Ford had requested.

Republicans agree to use only one camera, as Ford requested. (Big deal..)

Republicans said Kavanaugh would not be in same room as Ford during questioning. (I don't think that was ever an issue but R's did clarify it.)

I say if she doesn't agree to this they forget about her whining and hold the committee vote on Monday.

Heard today that she confessed this to her tharipist, but told them that 4 men attacked her, and she cannot be sure what house, what date, who was there etc...

If this is all she has, was pretty much doa her story!

We were assuming he was guilty....remember? The comments were stating that even if he attempted to rape a girl when he was a teenager it didn't matter. Get with the program, brother....that was your conclusion as well (attempted rape or sexual assault doesn't matter if he was a drunk teen).

The accusation is that he forced her on a bed, groped her, covered her mouth when she tried to scream and tried to tear off her clothes. Is this how you "fooled around" when you were a teen???

If guilty it is not for fooling around.

Was Grover Cleveland, a Democrat, removed from office because he not only raped a woman, but she got pregnant due to that rape. And what did the Democrats do? The elected him President, twice!

What about Lyndon Johnson, also a Democrat. Was he removed from office due to several incidents of indecent exposure and flashing both men and women? Nope. He was elected Vice President, then finished out JFK's term then was elected to a 4 year term of his own.

For starters, there is absolutely NO evidence that the Judge did what this Democrat activist has alleged. In fact her story is so full of holes that nobody with any intelligence would believe it. She can't remember when. She can't remember where. She can't remember who, other than the Judge. She never reported it to the authorities. In fact she never reported it to anybody. And the one woman who said she told her got the details so wrong she withdrew her statement and said she had no first hand knowledge of the incident.

When are the American voters going to wake up and reject the politics of personal destruction. I can think of few things that are more anti-American!

But that is not what is being discussed. The OP asks where the idea originates that, even if the guy is guilty, it would disqualify him. Yeshua1 and I were discussing the same hypothetical, that IF he were guilty of the charges claimed by the woman (attempted rape).

I agree that he cannot be criminally charged. I also believe that even if guilty he isn’t disqualified because people change. That is also my theological position when it comes to justice (not a removal of all consequences but a removal of all judgment and a shift from punishment towards reconciliation). What amazes me is the number of people here who hold tight to a theological idea of justice only to abandon it as a “real world” principle.

She claims she called someone on her cell phone and told them what happened. The Judge graduated high school in 1983. The first cell phone, "The Brick" was sold in Chicago in 1984. She is lying through her teeth.

I don't find her story reliable either. But, again, that isn't the issue posed in the OP (the OP went into the hypothetical).

IF the Judge was guilty of attempted rape as a teen, do you believe it would be a factor today....35 years later? Does a crime demand punishment for justice to be served? If he were guilty and the statute of limitations have elapsed, would he have escaped the judgement he rightfully deserved?

(I know it's a philosophical/ theological way of considering the issue, but the post is in the "General Baptist section, not "news" or "politics", and the question is whether it matters what someone has done 35 years ago as a teen).
