When is a marriage valid?

In another thread - (which got off OP on the very first response!!!) it was stated that "I think marriage should be a matter handled in the Church. It should not be a government issue."

Do you agree with that statement.

Suppose a "church" decided that wedding vows would only be valid for 10 years - and then could be renewed. (just like a drivers license)
Suppose a church decided that a couple could be married at age 10
Suppose a church decided (fill in the blank)

Should the State have anything to do with weddings.

What would an unchruched couple do if they wanted a wedding?

Other issues involved with this

I like the idea that marriage is handle by both Church and Government.
Here is why. The church can't make it law . The church can preform the marriage but cannot enforce the responsibilities. As far as where we should marry. The Church is best but a marriage is just as valid by a justice of the peace

My wife and I were married by a justice of the peace and then later we celebrated it by a church wedding..

I suppose some would say you were not married - until you were married in the church.

Some may say that although them saying doesn't make it true .There is no commandment made to be married in a church, or by a minister. I have been married to the same woman for 45 years. Being married in a Church doesn't make a marriage. God and love makes the marriage. A church wedding at the time just was not affordable.Besides a big deal wedding can cost thousands of dollars. If we would have had to marry in a church it would have put us in deep debt and that isn't the way to start a new life together.

There have been people married in either the civil court, or in a church, but God does not regard their union as being valid either case, such as in Gay weddings!

Marrage was the purview of the parents (the father) of the daughter before there was goverment or the church.

A gay wedding is not a wedding but instead is a mockery of God and The family.

MB- I trust that all true weddings are gay! I want those marriages to be a happy time. Now - I would agree that a h0mose/ual union would be a mockery of God and the family.

wrong. the church should enforce the responsibilities of marriage. Paul said we are to support our families. He also said couples are not to deprive one another sexually. The church should bring people in to talk about their problems and stop them before they divorce. We have a lot of very impotent pastors and nice guy deacons nowdays.

and if the covenant - as agreed to by both parties was only for ten years?
Can we just decide that a day has only 12 hours?

I don't see where the church had any authority to alter the definition of marriage to allow 10 year marriages.

But by your argument earlier, regarding justice of the peace, if the state marries a gay couple it must be a valid marriage.

NOTICE: This post is not in support of gay marriage.
Not true I' never wrote any thing like that
If it were you would have QUOTED it but you didn't

See above you said marriage is just as valid by a justice of the peace. That is a government only marriage. By that stance, you must also accept gay marriage as legitimate by the government.

Why would you assume something like that was meant in my post. I never even mentioned Gay marriage
Your the one that assumed it and then you tried to make it seem as if I was ok with it. This thread is about marriage not Homosexuals. Maybe you see it from your point of view because of your own problems.

I did not assume that is what you meant to say, but rather, I pointed out that by association that is what you did in fact say whether you meant to or not.

The thread is about marriage in the church vs. the government and are both valid. The United States government now recognizes homosexual marriage. Do you think those marriages are valid? If not, what makes any other government marriage valid?

That is the point I am trying to make.

The authority to marry a man and a woman is given directly by God who established marriage in the first place. God established the government and the church - both of which have the God-given authority to perform biblical marriages.

At any event you had no reason to assume such.
A marriage of two people of the same sex is an abomination in the eyes of God so it is the same in my mind. For your information when I was married the justice used the same words as a minister would use. It started out "We are gathered together here in the presence of God" It was not just "do you take this woman to be your wife"

Two women or two men cannot be joined together to be one flesh. This is why I called gay marriage a mockery. Gay marriage is an attempt to destroy marriage altogether.
