I am currently the interim pastor of a church (over 6 month snow)

The music director wants the title of my message and the message text by Monday morning for the following
week. ( for Sun, July 14, the info was to be in by Monday, Jul 8)

Well, I work a bi-vo on Mon and Tues 1 pm to 10 pm - but the last couple of weeks I have been working overtime, and that has been wearing very much on my physical being. Could I do this on Sunday afternoon - maybe - but I just use Sun as time to wind down.

In addition - trying to get everything competed on Mon am - IMHO is unreasonable - as I do not think it is proper to be rushed in coming up with a message title as well as the text I would be using.
Here is the interesting part - the music director told me that the message title is not enough to choose songs for the service. She stated it is important to know the text, so she can properly choose songs.

Currently the bulletin is published on Wed pm- we only have a few people in the church - and people are doing multiple jobs.

I would like to get to the point as to where I will be a few weeks in advance for the subjects I will be teaching.

I have just started Sat AM visitation - and am thinking about finishing up the bulletin myself on Sat am.

So, do you think I am being unreasonable by not providing the message title and text by Mon AM.
If you need to "Sock it to me" so be it.

I think expecting you to have a title by Monday is unreasonable. When I preached I had no idea what the title of a sermon was going to be because I had to do the work in getting into the text and laying out points.

I would suggest that you tell the music director just to do the music without knowing what your going to preach and trust the Holy Spirit will work it together. I understand what your music ministry may be trying to do in coordinating all the music around your title or topic. But even as a full time pastor I never had a sermon on a Monday for the following week. That, in my opinion, is quite unreasonable. As a vocational Pastor your time is even cut that much shorter. Plus you have to have time with your family.

Good gravy! Of course it's unreasonable.

My pastor tries to plan ahead and does a lot of the times, but many times, he has said from the pulpit - "I had a message planned for this morning, but on Friday [or such and such day] the Holy Spirit led me in another direction and I am saving the other sermon for next week."

I think the entire worship service should flow well - it keeps distractions away. If the pastor is preaching on marriage and the family, then "God of Earth and Outer Space" would not usher in a readiness for that particular sermon.

As a church pianist of 42 years, you should know that I believe the song service portion of the worship service is extremely important. The songs and hymns don't have match like a suit and tie, but if the pastor is going to preach on the Holy Spirit - shouldn't the congregation be singing songs about the Holy Spirit in preparation for a message? Not all the songs would have to be that way, but at least one or two.

My pastor uses the hymn book and even older hymnbooks to drive home some of this point. He will say, "We just got through singing 'Breathe on Me'. 'Take thou my heart....cleanse every part....'. Did you mean it? Did we mean it?"

I rambled, but to answer your question - requiring you to have your sermon and text ready on Monday morning....that's not wise nor does it have any consideration for you nor your message.

Private joke -as the music director also regularly attends the local 7th Day Baptist church.

One pastor I knew in the NJ/PA convention had no problem at all in choosing text or topic, since the church *required* that his Sunday morning sermon be on the *same* text as in the adult SS quarterly!

Nothing like letting Nashville direct the choice of your sermon....

I am only amazed that he acquiesced to such a demand.

Developing sermons in the midst of summer snow is difficult.

Neither of you are being unreasonable.
The music director wants the songs to match your sermon.
You need all time you can get.

I’m frequently printing out my class notes the morning that I teach, I understand perfectly.

Be reasonable
Simply communicate your difficulty and find a solution together.

Give her what you think it will be then later in the week when it changes let her know.

Yes it is better to coordinate music selection with the message. But not at the expense of a prayerfully prepared message. If you cannot come up with a title in time for bulletin publication, go with a generic, i.e. "From the heart of the Pastor."

Tell him you come up with your sermons and sermon titles WHEN The Lord lays them on your heart.
