Are there many Baptists on here who are members of the Southern Baptist Convention? Those are the Baptists who are most numerous in the area I have moved to. What are your opinions of the SBC?

May I ask why you left? And what is your opinion of the denomination?

I left due to moving away. As far as the denomination. There are current things about the denomination's direction that scare me. This June will be a crucial pivotal moment I think. Will they continue down the path of Greear or make a push back to theological conservatism?

But, the denomination as a whole, namely, the day to day boots on the ground churches, are usually solid.

Would you have remained SBC out of tradition or support for the SBC?

Well I can currently affirm the Baptist Faith and Message so...it depends on what you mean by support for the SBC I guess.

Affirming the BF&M to some extent and contributing to the coorporative program. To my knowledge that is all the SBC requires.

Even the coop is somewhat optional.

The coop is the only thing that is not optional (SBC members can hold the BF&M to varying degrees but must participate in the cooperative program to be SBC).

I thought the Co-Op was optional but it meant you do not get to send messengers.

I do not think so. (I am not sure SBC makes sense without the Co-Op). But that's my understanding (I think they have to be coorporating churches).

Yes, looking at the SBC site sending regular contributions through the Cooperative Program to the state/regional convention to support and participate in the Convention’s worldwide ministry and mission efforts is not optional.

Hmm I read something on the site earlier today that made me think otherwise, I'll have to look again.

Dave is absolutely correct. in the NY City association - (I am Upstate - the CNYBA) Dozens of NY City churches give zero dollars to the State Convention or their local association. But as Dave also said - if you do not give you cannot vote. The church I just took over a few months ago - has given nothing for years - well - we do now.
Also, I should mention that some churches still hold to the 1963 BF&M

So, Dave Taylor - are you now with a IFB or ....?

    From sbc.net regarding Co-Op payments:

What your church chooses to do in this regard is, of course, in its own hands, for each church is fully autonomous in all matters, including its giving.
