    Hi,

I want to go back to school for an MDiv. I have looked at schools now for almost a year, and after about 200 edits, changes, school additions, school subtractions, calls, emails, mapping out every class I would want to take at each school, and pouring over their websites, I have come down to these 3. Maybe y'all could help me out with your interpretation of their reputation, quality, etc.

    Baptist Seminary of Kentucky
    Colgate Rochester Crozer
    Bethany

I know the last isn't baptist, but if you have any opinions on it one way or the other, I would still be interested in hearing it.

Thanks for any help you can offer me in my discernment process.

    Soooo

you’ve made 3 posts and been a member for 3 yrs since 2018

    where do you live?

what is the end goal of your education?

what kind of student are you? Grade wise

why did you choose those 3?

will you work FT? PT? Not at all?

    kids?

    spouse?

how much do you have saved?

you do realize that real life goes on even though you are in school?

    you have a bachelors?

    what discipline?

    on campus student?

    do you have health insurance?

prior service? That’s free health care and $$$ for tuition

    how old are you?

    children?

    how old?

    Spouse work?

why would you want to study w Glenn Hinson?

    what denomination?

See how this is like Calculus 3?

too many variables for us to know how to help you

why do you care what we think?

wouldn’t family, friends or pastor be of much more assistance?

maybe you could go to Harvard? We have a recent visitor on the board that teaches there

he even studied under one of the top 3-5 Professors of the 20th century in Bruce Metzger. If true that must have been a great opportunity.
    Maybe others will respond?

BTW, for me, it would be none of the 3 for any reason

the faculties are very insufficient IMO, and the objectives questionable

very few seem to really be able to teach you to love the WoG. Again, JMO.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I thought the faculty at Baptist Seminary of Kentucky would be good since almost all of them came from Southern Baptist Seminaries. Plus, I am not going back to seminary to learn to love the WoG, I don't think that is something that can be taught, that is the Spirit's doing in our life.

    Soooo....

I'll respond to you in the same respect that you gave me.

My number of posts has nothing to do with this question unless you are saying 1-5 posts go to ______ 6-20 posts go to ________ and more than 20 posts go to ________

All schools have live zoom classes, so my location is not important. I can do it from anywhere in the world.

The end goal is to maintain my employment as a chaplain. My hospital system now requires everyone to either hold the MDiv or be enrolled to get it as of Jan 1.

My bachelors I had a 3.2, My Master of Theological Studies I had a 3.7, my Master of Public Administration I had a 3.41, and my Doctor of Ministry I had a 4.0. They will not count any education as MDiv equivalent (even though the BCCI did, and I am a board-certified chaplain).

Because my hospital tuition reimbursement means that I will not have to pay anything for these degrees, and my denomination will scholarship anything that is not covered.

Kids and spouse are not relevant to the seminary's character, reputation, and quality.

Obviously, life goes on during school. You do realize that a day is 24 hours, right? That's obvious, too.

Health insurance? What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?

    No, no prior service.

My age is irrelevant, but I am not a "traditional" aged student.

    Again with the kids....

Glen Hinson because I am interested in learning about African-American Theology, hermeneutics, interpretations, etc.

No, I do not see how a simple question of what you think of these schools is Calculus 3. I see how you are trying to twist it to make it that way, but no, it is not. It was a simple question that several others managed to reply to, but not you; no, this was too complicated for you, apparently.

And if I wanted to go to Harvard I would have listed that as an option, stay on point.

I really hope your tone and abrasive nature are only geared toward me, if not, God help anyone who has ever met you, especially your Church if you are a leader in one.

Have you looked at Dallas Theological Seminary? They have satellite campuses in various states and countries, and you can also take the coursework on line.

Of the schools mentioned, Crozer would definitely not be on my list. It was at the center of the Modernist/Fundamentalist kerfluffle back in the day.

I'm from Texas so yes, I did, however, my problem is their tuition. At $619 per hour, I would only be able to take 3 classes per year with what my hospital will reimburse. The other schools I can take up to 8 at CRCDS and Bethany (after the scholarship that they have awarded me), and 6 at BSK. BSK also awarded me 30 transfer credit hours towards the MDiv as well. I'm trying to finish the degree in 3-4 years with no out-of-pocket expenses and no loans. Plus DTS does not offer the MDiv, only the ThM at 120 hours so it would take me 14 years to finish. I doubt the hospital will give me that much time and they do not accept any degrees other than the MDiv. I've fought this battle with them and lost every time. My other option is to look for another hospital system that will not require the degree and will accept what I already have.

Thank you for the suggestion, I really appreciate the help!

Are you talking about the "kerfuffle" that happened back in the 1920s which started with the Presbyterians?

Yes, and concurrently in the Northern Baptist Convention. It actively raged from the 1920s to the late 40s.

For cost effectiveness your list is fine. Which Bethany was my one question from your list?

    Hi!

You bring up a point that I failed to mention, thank you! I forgot to mention that the school must be ATS accredited. That takes Grace and Luther Rice out. I talked to Luther Rice and even Shiloh University but the hospital said no due to accreditation.

    Thanks for your reply!
