Do you currently have a CB radio?
in you vehicle, how about a portable one?
If so - do you use it often, sparingly - maybe you just listen?

Did you used to have one back during the CB craze of the middle '70's.

    and what is/was you handle??

I well remember the CB radio craze of the 1970s. I never had one even back then, though several friends did. I think I was too busy listening to my 8-track tapes!

I still have the equipment, but is not hooked up. Got to be that all on CB around here were nutt jobs. My grandpa could regularly talk to England from Ga. He Had a 1500 watt amp and 48 DB gain directional beams. Of course it was skip, but you got to have the juice to regularly talk that kind of skip.

I bought a CB a couple of years ago with my tax refund.
Dont use it too often - I do live one mile North of I-90 - so
I could get a lot of truckers.

May use it more when I travel to SC this fall - wow thats only about 18 weeks

Your grandpa's rig sounds like a ham radio. Is that what you have?

Do you still use it? That's what my granddad's radio was. I still have it, but have not talked on it in years. I am sure you know how to make it scream like an eagle when you key it?

My handle was Cactus Jack, but I was in some kind of competition with a couple of truckers that used it.

yes ... I have a cobra 29 LX in my F350 Dually. Firestick antenna on the headache rack of the flatbed ... tops at 10-11' off the ground (yeah, gotta remove for a whataburger drive through! )... no linear/booster.

with the SWR tuned ... that thing will get out over 6 miles.

phones are fine ... but radios are much better when convoying.

Did use my CB on my trip to SC. Especially when there were back ups, and ect.
Made the trip a bit eaiser, since I was alone - Mrs. Salty stayed home.

I know zilch about CB communication equipment, had a cousin loved to talk, gift of gab, was into it big time back in the 70s. I’ve pondered getting into HAM radio strictly for backup communications in the event of a zombie apocalypse. Haven’t mustered the enthusiasm to do it yet.

If I were considering mobile communications, my go-to would be HAM also.
My dad got into hamming after WWII with surplus equipment - still remember the x-mitter: a BC610. For some reason I never did connect, probably because I did NOT have the gift-of-gab that seemed to be a requirement.

Curiosity did give me a jolt once though. Dad was talking to somebody & had the top of the x-mitter open & I was looking at a huge coil & wondered whether it would shock me or not! Now I was ~ 9-10 YO, so had very little common sense. So i swiped my finger across the windings sorta like touching an iron to see if it had heated up yet! NOTHING!!!!
So - remember my age - I just had to confirm my new knowledge, so once again I touched it; this time no swipe, just laid my finger on it. Didn't shock me, but sure did burn a neat groove in my finger. Dad saw what happened & my expression & had to get off-air he was laughing so hard.
After getting my composure back, I realized that the first time dad was listening; 2nd time he was x-mitting.
Even at this young age I learned pretty quick to stay away from his stuff!!!:Laugh
