One reason I often fail to understand verses in the KJV: a poor knowledge of the meaning of words therein, prepositions especially.

Can anyone tell me the quickest way to improve this?

    Thank you.

No reason to give up on the KJV. Pretty sure it's available on line.

Melvin E. Elliott, The Language of the King James Bible: A Glossary Explaining its Words and Expressions. Garden City, New York: Doubleday, 1967

If a word ends in th, or eth substitute "s". Est or st just drop the ending for the modern word.

I have found many of the resources here helpful.

Think that the Defined one tried to give modern day meanings for many of the more archaic words still being used in the kjv!

Another very good version was the 1967 scofield, as they would bracket archaic terms and words and put modern words in the text and move the original ones to the margins to see

Finding a Bible version that you can understand is key as the starting place for Bible study. If you think the TR and MT are better than the Critical Text (my preferred) then try the WEB (World English Bible). It can be found on line does not seem biased or difficult to read.

    Here is a link:
Bible Gateway passage: John 3:16 - World English Bible

    WEB
For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

    KJV
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

As you can see, the WEB simply states the text plainly, without the need to decrypt it.

I never owned one. But definitions are a fantastic thing.

The Defined KJV was produced by D. A. Waite Jr. and is sold by the KJVO/TRO Dean Burgon Society.

The ironically humorous part is that almost every "defined" KJV word has in the margin the rendering that appears in the NKJV.

I've returned to reading the KJV because, when I tried reading the NKJV and MEV, I found that it differed in meaning from the KJV, and I think the KjV is more accurate and beautiful.

So, I just need to buy a Strong's Concordance and King James Bible dictionary. This way, whenever I don't know the meaning of a word in the KJV, I can look it up.

This afternoon, I read Luke 1, starting slowly, and I think I understood it.

I'm not worried if the Bible version I use (incl the KJV) is beautiful or not - is it accurate. But then again - NO translation, including the KJV, can ever be 100% accurate - as has been said - "it looses something in the translation"

Guido, Let me ask you this: I Kings 18:27 (KJV)-- Elijah is mocking the prophets and in part states "either he is talking, or he is pursuing...." So what does "pursuing" mean?

When I looked up the meaning of the Greek word, for the word "pursuing" in this verse, the concordandance said that it means a withdrawal to a private place.

Some modern translations render it as using the bathroom, but that's not what the word means.

I think that, in the verse we are speaking of, "pursue" has the meaning of withdrawing to a private place.
