Nothing about that surprises me. NKJV seeks to maintain style and flow of KJV.

I'm a little surprised that the NLT uses the word "shall" as often as it does.

I would have thought "shall" would be changed to "will" each time it occurred.

I'm right there with you on that. The word is rarely used these days except for laughs.

Yes, "shall I " is now "should I."

Yeah, the NLT seems to be behind the times in that regard a few times. :)

A smattering of snips comparing the two versions follows.

NLT : I spoke to you about it repeatedly

    Luke 23:41
NKJV : And we indeed justly
NLT : We deserve to die

NKJV : For God so loved the world
NLT : For this is how God loved the world

    1 Cor. 9:16
NKJV : for necessity is laid upon me
NLT : I am compelled by God to do it

    Matt. 23:32
NKJV : Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers' guilt
NLT : Go ahead and finish what your ancestors started

    2 Sam. 18:25
NKJV : there is news in his mouth
    NLT : he has news

    To be continued...

. while the Nlt is a dynamic one, like the Niv
The Nkjv is very formal translation, like the nas 1995, while the Nlt like the Niv

Thanks, much prefer the more formal versions such as nas and esv!

Trouble understanding the fact that many DON'T understand this fact, bro. That is the real surprise, to even have a thread like this.
99.99% of the word/phrase choices in the NKJV are because of style and flow that the NKJV has as its foundation.

The purpose of this forum is to compare and contrast Bible versions. And that is exactly what I am doing.

Should Bible translations be made that conform to the style and flow of a translation that had its roots half a millennium ago? Or should Bible versions be fresh and faithful? Should they be put in the language of the people, or serve an antiquarian purpose? Should a translation have as its aim to be faithful to the King James lineage or to a higher and more useful goal?

Romans 8:37 is especially helpful, I believe.
