This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme.

You make shipwreck in regard to your faith by (1) not keeping faith and a good conscience, and (2) professing falsehoods concerning God.

Compare the above commentary with the nonsense proclaimed by Gill and posted by KenH.

Compare the commentary that I posted in my post #7 by John Gill earlier in this thread with the nonsense proclaimed and posted by Van.

Gill's commentary is gibberish, but the following is rock solid:

    1 Timothy 1:18-20

Van's commentary is gibberish, but the following is rock solid:

"concerning faith have made shipwreck; which designs not the grace, but the doctrine of faith, as before observed, which men may profess, and fall off from, and entirely drop and lose. Though supposing faith as a grace is meant, the phrase, "have made shipwreck of it", is not strong enough to prove the total and final falling away of true believers, could such be thought to be here meant; since persons may be shipwrecked, and not lost, the Apostle Paul was thrice shipwrecked, and each time saved; besides, as there is a true and unfeigned, so there is a feigned and counterfeit faith, which may be in persons who have no true grace, and may be shipwrecked, so as to be lost."

"Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander,.... The former of these is mentioned in 2 Timothy 2:17-18 and that part of faith he made shipwreck of, or erred in, was the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead, whereby the faith of some nominal believers was overthrown; and this was attended with the putting away of a good conscience, he seemingly before had; for his profane and vain babblings increased to more ungodliness: the latter seems to be the same with Alexander the coppersmith, who did the apostle much evil, 2 Timothy 4:14-15 and it may be is the same with him who was at Ephesus when the apostle was there, Acts of the Apostles 19:33 and where he might be now with Hymenaeus, with whom he might agree in his erroneous opinions, and therefore are particularly mentioned, Ephesus being the place where Timothy now was."

    - excerpt from John Gill's commentary on 1 Timothy 1:20

'Though supposing faith as a grace is meant...." Is it or isn't it. Does this gibberish say? Nope.
Is it "feigned and counterfeit faith?" The commentary does not say. Is the idea to make shipwreck of non-faith? Who knows based on Gill's gibberish.

Here again is the truth from scripture:
    1 Timothy 1:18-20
This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. 2) Is the shipwreck of ""feigned and counterfeit faith?"

John Gill was presenting plausible possibilities. Really, Van, if all you are going to do is keep repeating the same nonsense over and over again, then you really should stop posting on this thread.

A good 5 point Calvinist I believe. Honestly this Forum could use more of these types of people to offset the Arminian groups thanks for posting.
