I guess we will just have to agree to disagree on how marriage should be properly regarded.

I don’t “require” anything. Unless a couple ask for my opinion, it’s none of my business and I will not speculate on their “situation”.

If they ask my opinion, I suspect I would tell them much the same thing that you would tell them concerning what scripture says.

    peace to you

    I suppose so.

I also do not believe sin is excused.

My point is that I do not believe we should be offended when the world sins. The world is, by it's very nature, sin.

Our eyes should be set on Christ, not the world.

I expect politicians to be sinful, to tell crude jokes, to be drunkards, immoral, gossips, and such.

But the church should not be that way. That is why we need to have church discipline and to "judge those within", not "those without".

Oh, okay. You don't think that politicians are Christians. Since most people are not Christians(wide gate vs. narrow gate), it is logical to expect that at least most politicians are not Christians.

I actually agree with him to a great extent. Why look to the world or secular to prescribe the Christian life? They don't even agree.

But there is a difference between a couple being married in their congregation but not by their secular government and simply shacking up.

Mace has been married twice and now is living with a man to whom she is engaged. She is "nondenominational" but seems to interpret this as not attending a church but holding a Christian faith.

    Is she a Christian? I don't know.

In SC there is no "common marriage". Since she speaks of her boyfriend as her fiancee that'd indicate they are not yet married.

Died it offend me that a politician lives with a man to whom she is not married? No. Doesn't have anything to do with me.

Does it offend me that a politician told a crude joke at a political event. No. Doesn't have anything to do with me.

Does it offend me that Trump told crude jokes, "locker room humor", and insulted people? No. Doesn't have anything to do with me.

Christians need to be less concerned about politicians and more concerned about sharing the gospel and walking in the Spirit.

I don't know if politicians are Christians or not.

Mace, Trump, Biden, Clinton (both of them) have said and done unChristian things. That does not offend me as I do not endorse any of them. If I did support them then I may be offended, but by my own support.

But I know that I have to obey God and that means not judging those outside of the church, not condemning the servants of Another, judging those within my own congregations to guard against sin and not being "easily offended".

Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlburg professes to be a Christian. They act in violent films, use foul language and tell inappropriate jokes. Are they Christian? I don't know.

Am I offended that they make those movies? No. If a movie offends me then I walk out of turn it off (as applicable).

Now .. if I support her, or Trump, then I have a cause to be offended. Not by those jokes or lifestyles but by my own endorsement.

Yes, we are. Here it is with Christians interacting with the World. I take Paul's words that we are not to be so easily offended or provoked as a command. But I understand that many do not.

Ephesians 5:11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

    I agree.

The difference is I view not being easily offended and provoked as equally important because both are Scripture. We can't just pick one and ignore the other.

Consider Jesus' interaction with the woman who had been married several times before and was with a man who was not her husband. He was not offended. He was not provoked. He addressed her sin (very clearly, BTW) and shared with her the hope of eternal life.

Why can't Christians do that? Why can't we follow the example of Christ?

Obey Scripture by not being so easily offended or provoked while addressing sin and sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Christians are too easily offended. That is one point. The other is politicians using these snowflakes for their own gain.

I disagree. Do you think that Lot was wrong to be vexed over the sin that surrounded him?

No. I also view sin as problematic (vexing). Sin leads to death, to destruction. We should be able to discern sin and always be vexed over sin.

I am vexed over your rejection of Scripture telling us not to be easily offended or provoked. I find it problematic. When we feel free to ignore some passages we don't like we cannot complain when others ignore passages we do like.

But I am not offended by your rejection of the passage. I believe it is wrong, perhaps even sinful. But I am not offended.

    I'm offended at her vulgarity. Why can't I be? I don't understand.

Sin is offensive. It deserves and receives the wrath of God.

I am also offended at my own sin. I get mad and sometimes cry when I think of my own shortcomings and disobedience to God. I prayer for his forgiveness, mercy, and grace.

When I hear of things like this happening AND other sinful things that people, especially Christians are involved in - I pray for them, too. I pray BECAUSE I was first offended by hearing or seeing these sinful acts.

We SHOULD be offended by sin. Not to the point of hating people, but to the point of praying and trying to do something.

I don't understand why I can't be offended by sin.

I don't know why. I only referenced the verse about not being easily offended.

I also pray for people. I just see no advantage in being offended by the world (certainly by a politician).

Offended means ""to cause (a person or group) to feel hurt, angry, or upset by something said or done e.g. was offended by their language".

I do not believe a Christian should be so entangled in the World that their sins make us "hurt, angry, or upset".

The sins of the World make me sad. But not angry. Not hurt. Not upset. It is what I expect from the World because so once was I.

Sin in my own life is another matter. It is offensive to me because it doesn't s disobedience.

Edit: If it helps to understand my position here, I view sin like a cancer (but worse, a spiritual disease or curse). Sins are manifestations of this infirmity. I am not offended by the cancer, I am sad it exists and that people are perishing. I point to the cure.

I am NOT easily offended - but this one went over the line. In this day of sin being accepted - even by Christians - we need to stand up for the truth!.

Makes no difference if was a church service, or just a prayer meeting - this was totally unacceptable - especially for someone who claims to be born again.

    I disagree to an extent.

Sexual immorality and dirty jokes by a politician is something I have seen throughout my lifetime, even with "Christian politicians". It looks s par for the course.

But I agree with the part that we need to stand for truth. We should not only condemn the dirty joke but also the lifestyle.

Christians should not support or associate with politicians who profess Christianity but act otherwise - whether Mace or Trump.

But what I am saying is that Christians should not be hurt or angered. That is what offended means. Christians should find the comments wrong, and they should point out that Christians are not to live immoral lives, not to insult, not to use bad language, not to tell inappropriate jokes.

I agree with most of your post....but I disagree that Christians should be angry or hurt by the sins of other people. We should be saddened. We should offer correction. We should not associate with those people. We should call out the sin.

Scripture tells us to offer correction and then if ineffective "turn them over to Satan". Scripture tells us not to associate with them. But we shouldn't be offended. We should do all of the above in love, hoping they will repent.

But yes, we should not support those people. That is why we should not support Trump as well. But how many will jump on the "Mace offended me" bandwagon while not being offended by Trump?

Until the conservative Republicans who rightly identify the issue with Mace likewise denounce Trump it's all politics. It's all politics because they ignore the sin when it suits them but become offended when it does not.

Where was the outrage when Trump insulted his political enemies? Where was the outrage when Trump cursed during Presidential speeches? I am not even offended by the hypocrisy of those "Christian Republicans". I am saddened. I pray for them. But they do not hurt me. They do not anger me.

My main issue here is that conservative Republicans and Christian Democrats have no right to be offended by Mace's comments because of the people they support. It is not Christianity but politics because being "offended" only applies when it suits them.

Christians in general can be offended but shouldn't. An offence is something that hurts or angers. We should be saddened. We should identify the sin. We should do this in love, not anger.

Christ saved us when we were sinners. He saved us out of those types of lifestyles. He loved us even while we were sinners, while we were enemies.

I think you are packing WAY too much into a word that you have decided to use to describe the outrage over U.S. Representative Mace's lifestyle as a professing "Christian" and her making light of it, especially in a public forum - "offended". You are trying to ride that one word for WAY more than you should. Maybe try a different tack to make your point.

I could be packing too much into the word. I checked the meaning (Websters) and it means to be hurt and angered. But I realize that people often don't use actual dictionary meanings of words as well.

So I am really not sure if we agree or disagree.

Here is my state (without using the word "offended").

I am not hurt or angered by the sins of other people. Ian, however, saddened. If that person proclaims to be a Christian then I believe we are to speak out against the sin and refrain from associating with that person until that person repents.

The appropriate response in this case (and in the case of Trump) would be to explain why that is sin and why Christians will not support them.

Are we in agreement, just arguing over a definition?
