Starting with the 1980s, Ronald Reagan had been considered the political Polaris of the Republican Party. Is the Republican Party still the party of Reagan in 2023 - especially his advocacy of free trade, free market capitalism, etc.

The repub elites in DC and around the country were never the “party of Reagan” as the repub base was and is.

The elites were embarrassed by Reagan and they still are embarrassed by the base.

    peace to you

I would imagine anyone serving in Congress for more than 1 generation qualifies.

Lets see - key word is "specifically"

Okay - let me re-word this
How about some names - Last and first name -
Until then - you post carries absolutely NO weight!

I believe the repub “elites” refer the donor class, some media and some elected reps. Mitch Maconald, Romney, Bush family, Chamber of Commerce, Bill Chrystal, to mention a few.

    peace to tou

Sounds like you are basically referring to neoconservatives.

Not sure about definitions. Just know these folks do not respect the base, nor embrace the conservative policies of Reagan.

    peace to you

I may be wrong, Ronald Reagan was elected President the first year I turned 18 and was old enough to vote, so my memory of what he stood for may be off, but …

Reagan supported a strong U.S. military to defend against the very real threat of a Soviet Union and to champion the freedom of East Germans and the security of all NATO allies. He did this without any major invasions or wars costing thousands of US lives.

These “neo-conservatives” that claimed a Reagan legacy and controlled foreign policy until Trump reversed their policy advocate for invasions of Iran, Syria and general U.S. troop deployments around the world irrespective of the cost in US lives to obtain dubious goals against shadowy threats.

I am not sure that the “Party of Reagan” survived his departure. From a foreign policy perspective, Donald Trump seems more of a Reagan Republican than the Bush’s were.

… but as I said, I was only 18 when Reagan was elected President, so I may be misremembering the past.

Ron Paul had a great speech on the House floor blasting the neoconservatives in 2003.

The Republican party tends to be more open
ie - several R's have various views of abortion.

But - HOW MANY Pro-life Democrats are there?

We have totally opposite views of the Republican Party. Seems to me that the MAGA folks call anyone that steps even the least bit of out line with them a RINO. What they don't seem to understand is if all those people they pejoratively call RINOs don't vote for the Republicans, then, other than the deep red states, the Republicans can't win statewide elections, including for president.

The Republican Party has lost its core identity. If I asked 10 Republicans what the Republican Party stood for under Reagan, 8 of the 10 would give the same answer. Today, asking 4 Republicans what the party stands for would get 3 different answers.

The Democrat Party suffered the same fate long ago with the death of the “Southern Democrat”. The Democrat party of the last 30 years has been the party AGAINST the Republican Party. Nowhere has this been clearer than in the Trump elections where polls clearly showed votes being cast FOR and AGAINST Donald Trump. Otherwise, the Democrat party has historically been a conglomeration of factions that have little in common to bind them without a clear Republican to hate.

It seems like the Republican Party has followed the footsteps of the Democrats and become a collection of unrelated factions that are United only by their hate of the “Liberal Democrats”. We are the Christian Republicans that want “pro-life” and the Hawk Republicans that want foreign wars and the Big Business Republicans that want corporate welfare. Each with little in common with the others and nobody with the charisma and vision to actual LEAD with a cohesive path forward.

I might be considered a "Hawk" but that does NOT mean I believe in War!
I believe we should fight when we need to!

For those who believe we should not fight in Ukraine
Then you would have believed that France should not have fought for the US in 1776!
Which then possibly the US would have lost the War of Rebellion in 1776!

    As far as corporate welfare
A situation here in CNY is a perfect example -
About 1990 Construction began in Syracuse for a very large mall.
The owner asked for a PILOT to reduce the taxes he would owe. That
request was granted. Once the agreement was completed Hundreds of
constructions jobs were created- after the mall was opened hundreds obtained
permament jobs. People were coming from long distance, including Canada to shop.
This greatly increased the economy for Syracuse and CNY,
Now about 20 years latter - the Mall wanted to enlarge - again they asked for a PILOT.
That I had concerned about. The big issue was that he wanted the PILOT to include
the original mall for another 20 years!

Compare that with individual welfare - how many jobs do they create? Granted there are people who truly do need help, but many abuse the system - and I do have some personal knowledge.

BTW, I do get very involved in politics - though I keep a clear line between politics and my church duties.

and one other thing - I am NOT a Republican!
