Songs and Christian Liberty

I agree that we must guard against seducing spirits.

I disagree that Christians singing "It Is Well (with my soul) in praise to God but accenting the 2nd and 4th beat is "seducing spirits".

Now, if you were talking about literally singing to rock music, country music, folk music, jazz music...depending on the actual music used... then I may agree.

But I cannot condemn Christians singing a distinct style of music that is sacred to worship while condoning hymns that use a worldly beat used in secular dancing.

I also disagree with those who condemned hymns for using "satanic" and worldly music a few centuries ago.

We are commanded by God not to condemn the worship of other believers as Jesus will make them stand.

It was wrong of the churches who condemned hymns when hymns were the "new cart".

It is likewise wrong for churches to condemn the praise of Christisns for accenting the "wrong" beat in their worship.

This is fun. We have to find a another mud pit to use, @Charlie24 . We are running out of fresh clay to make our mud balls.

I will start a thread (sometime) about the failure of churches regarding music. In short, churches lied to generations to enforce their ideas. I think they believed the lies and were just being irresponsible. But it created distrust nonetheless.

At least we met the deadline on not letting the sun go down on our anger. lol

I can't help that I'm from the old school and do my best to separate myself from all appearance of evil.

I can plainly see how the rock beat has taken control of some Churches to the point of ruination.

That's just the way I see it, and I will have no part of it. The rock beat has no place in house of God, period.

Hey, Jon, talking about the piano in worship, did you know that Jerry Lee Lewis went to school to become a preacher?

He was kicked out of that university for playing the piano in rock n roll fashion and influencing others in the same.

I wonder if that general rule would be followed today in Bible schools? I'm pretty sure not.

Times change, Jon, and I'm having no part of it.

Hmm, maybe our Bible schools should no longer allow pianos.

I always liked Jimmy Swaggarts style of preaching and listened to him quite often.

He and Jerry Lee Lewis were 1st cousins and hung out together up until adulthood.

Often in his sermons he spoke of the old days when he and Jerry Lee would beat the path.

That's where I learned that, along with some other funny stories of their old day together.

From WIKIPEDIA
His mother enrolled him at the Southwest Bible Institute in Waxahachie, Texas, (now Nelson Univ) an AOG college, so that he could sing evangelical songs exclusively. When Lewis daringly played a boogie-woogie rendition of "My God Is Real" at a church assembly, his association with the school ended the same night.

Was that to extreme for you, Salty?

Not trying to hijack the thread, just a quick story Jimmy Swaggart told about him and Jerry Lee while I have it on mind,

Jimmy said he was a struggling evangelist in those days never knowing if had enough money for gas to make it to the next meeting, and driving a worn out piece of junk that kept taped together.

Jerry Lee had just hit it big making over $10,000 a show at that time. Jimmy said he got a call from Jerry and he wanted to come see him and go to Church together.

They were driving to Church that morning in Jimmy's car and Jerry said, is this thing going the get us to Church? Jimmy said, I hope so.

Jerry told him, I can't have my cousin driving around in a piece of junk like this, we're going to get you a new car, what kind do you want?

Well I like an Oldsmobile, Jerry said we're going tomorrow morning and get you one.

Jimmy drove away with a brand new Oldsmobile paid in cash. He then said looking back on it, what was I thinking, I could have had a Cadillac.

Alice Cooper has taught adult Bible classes.

When I think piano I tend to think Billy Joel or Journey (their piano player is also a Christian and has released instrumental Christian albums).

Times do change. You do not have to be a part of it, but please stick around for it. We can discuss it anyway.

You put me to thinking about the piano, who it reminds of.

I would have to say after watching him most of my adult life, the piano brings to mind Jimmy Swaggart.

He could play it better than anyone I have ever seen but in a spiritual way.

I heard him say that he and Jerry Lee used to play the rock and roll at events until he was convicted and let it go.

He said Jerry Lee had always been a better piano player than himself.

Jimmy said that after Jerry Lee hit it big, he sent his dad to talk to Jimmy about a contract recoding Christian music.

He told Jimmy everything was set all he had to do was sign the contract and come to an agreement on money, with Sun Records.

He said you can be driving a brand new Cadillac just like the one I'm driving tomorrow as a bonus.

Jimmy said he knew what that meant and was tempted but turned it down, and told his uncle the Lord has called him to preach the Gospel.

He uncles said, son, I think I understand that.

I didn't even know Jimmy Swaggart played the piano.

Growing up we listened to groups like the Gaithers (I went to church with Guy Penrod when I lived in TN).

I as a young adult I liked Southern Gospel (more quartets, especially Gold City).
