OK, so how come Jerome got away with his Latin translation for 1,000 years when he admitted that it had mistakes in it?
BTW, the Wycliffe translation was a rendering of Jerome's Latin for the simple reason that the Church of Rome had let slip the knowledge of Greek and Hebrew in the West. It was good old Desiderimus Erasmus who published a Latin translation of the NT without Jerome's mistakes in 1516 and sparked off the Reformation.

Jerome understood something, he was not infallible as brilliant as he was.

His work he submitted to the Catholic Church Councils for approval.

“As I follow no leader save Christ, so I communicate with none but your blessedness, that is with the chair of Peter. For this, I know, is the rock on which the church is built!” Jerome, To Pope Damasus, Epistle 15 (A.D. 375).

Jerome did not want to admit certain books to the Canon of Scripture as well, but knew that the Chair of Peter was Infallible.
The Council of Rome under Pope Damasus declared the Canon ultimately.

Jerome knew the Church was infallibility guided under the Chair of Peter, he did not hold his opinion higher in proud rebellion like Protestants did.
Once Pope Damasus declared the Canon, Jerome fully accepted it as true. He conformed his opinion to the ruling of the Church.

That’s the difference.

Did the Apostle Paul sit under the "Chair of Peter?"

But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed. - Galatians 2
I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation. - Romans 15:20

“And besides, also, one only Catholic and Apostolic Church, which can never be destroyed, though all the world should seek to make war with it; but it is victorious over every most impious revolt of the heretics who rise up against it. For her Goodman hath confirmed our minds by saying, ‘Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.’ ” Alexander of Alexandria, Epistle on the Arian Heresy, 12 (A.D. 321).

The Catholic Church ploughs through history unstoppable, because it has Christ’s promise behind it. Not even the gates of hell can withstand it.
The Roman Catholic Church, Jehovah Witnesses, Landmark adherents, Church of Christ...all of these cults claim to be the one true catholic church. The CoC even claims of is the only church because "Church of Christ" is in the Bible and that is the name they adopted.

The Catholic Church did not even exist when Alexander of Alexandria wrote that letter. The word "catholic" means "universal". It means all Christian congregations (as opposed to individual congregations). It literally speaks of all congregations called out (in Christ).

The Catholic Church (as opposed to the catholic Church) began in apostacy, as a blend of Roman paganism and Christianity by compulsion. This is always, without exception, the outcome of compulsory Christianity. It starts with Christians alongside pagans in one collective and quickly becomes Christian themed paganism.

There are many Catholics (tradition) who are saved, but no true Roman Catholics (Catholics that adhere to the doctrine of their cult). It is impossible because "true Roman Catholics" reject the relationship the Bible states we have with Christ and with God in Christ. To believe Roman Catholic doctrine is to reject the gospel of Jesus Christ.

To accept Roman Catholic doctrine (SDA doctrine, Jehovah Witnesses doctrine, Mormon doctrine, etc.) as Christian is wrong.

A Baptist who believes in infant baptism is not a Baptist. A man who places his faith in the Roman Catholic Church is not a Christian.

Actually this is a salutary lesson for the Protestant brothers, humbling one’s opinions to the Chair of Peter that Jesus established.

Rebellion isn’t a virtue.

The Pope is like Peter continued living for 2000 years governing the Lord’s Sheep and lambs.

Yes enormous power and responsibility and he is only answerable to Christ. The Church was never a democracy, nor was Moses answerable to anyone other than God in the time of the Israelites.

This is how God so arranged things.

A lot of Baptists do the same. The KJV is dependent on that Latin. The Reformed doctrine of the Fall is dependent on what is a universally accepted error in Jerome's Latin translation used by Augustine.

It goes back to tradition. If an error is used, unknowingly at the time, to form a doctrine which in time produces other foundational doctrines then the error can be acknowledged but the doctrines born of the error have to remain. The reason is the fruits of that error have become essential to the faith of the sect.

I believe the church congregations as seven.

1. Messianic Rabbis are saved
2. Oriental Orthodox are saved
3. Greek Orthodox are saved
4. Catholics are saved
5. Protestants are saved
6. The American revived church are saved
7. The Word of Faith are saved

Regarding the people in the church it is like Noah's Ark, in which took in all kinds, both clean and unclean. The Lord will sort all of that out on his day.

I am most interested in the Protestant Church along with those churches who sincerely desire revival. I am not at all interested in the Catholic Church, even though I consider them part of the Christian Church.

I believe Christians may exist in all of these sects, but not all of these sects are Christian (per Scripture).

Paul was pointing out Peter’s behaviour not contesting his teaching.

After teaching at the Jerusalem Council that God showed no partiality between Jew and gentile.
Peter by his behaviour, separating to be with the Jewish believers only, was being a hypocrite.
Teaching one thing yet doing another.

In fact Paul was being true to Peter’s teaching.

My dad went to Catholic seminary with a Tom Monaghan. My dad would leave for the Navy and Tom Monaghan would go on to start Dominos Pizza. My dad would often lament that we kids were not brought up Catholic. In which I would agree with him. A Catholic upbringing is much better than a secular one.

Read again closely, especially the bold portion.

Jerome confesses that he made frequent mistakes in this business, although he was inspired: therefore we enact and ordain that no one henceforth do by his own authority translate any text of Holy Scripture into the English tongue or any other by way of book, pamphlet, or treatise. Nor let any such book, pamphlet, or treatise now lately composed in the time of John Wicklif aforesaid, or since, or hereafter to be composed, be read in whole or in part, in public or in private, under pain of the greater excommunication, till that translation have been approved by the diocesan of the place, or if occasion shall require, by a provincial Council. “

Vernacular translations were allowed, but only if it were approved by the Bishop or Council.
Try translate the Catholic Church’s book unauthorised and you would rightfully be in trouble.
The Catholic Church had copyright on its book, no Wally off the street could translate it in error.

Erroneous translations were rightly prohibited because erroneous translations of the Bible destroyed souls.

"The Catholic Church had copyright on its book"

The arrogance of that comment speaks for itself.

The bible is the word of God not the word of the RCC.

This thread, from the beginning makes me want to vomit.

I'm closing it. I should have closed it the first day. Open another if you want to.

I really worry can't sick about you all any more. If anyone thinks they are evangelising anyone here, you are mistaken. It's just gross insulting and tattle-telling.

I'm gone. I don't do anything but ban spammers anyway. By the way, Novelist's IP address is blacklisted when you look it up. Ban him if you choose. I should have when he first enrolled. But people started talking to him.

C'est la vie.

I can't this take or do this anymore.Confused
