Yeah, We've got the Bible Buddies (preschoolers) memorizing "Calvin's Institutes" tonight.

And oh yeah, the Youth Bible Bowl Quiz Team will be using the "Geneva" Bible, not the KJV for all their competitions.

And personally after visitation tonight I'll be leading the deacons in a study on how to prepare infants for baptism. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

I'm getting into this late, so someone else may have already made this point, but I don't think Bob Jones, Sr. was a Baptist. He started off as a Methodist evangelist, but I haven't a clue where he ended up.

Spurgeon (loosely quoted):

"If there were yellow stripes down the backs of all the elect, we would go around lifting shirt tails to find to whom we should witness. Since that is not the case, we preach to all, and God saves His own."

Modern Baptist Heroes:

John R. Rice
Lester Rolloff
Ross Fite (missionary to El Salvador)
Oliver Greene
R. G. Lee
Lee Robertson
G. B. Vick
Elmer Deal (missionary to Africa)
And (now don't shoot at me) Jerry Falwell. He is not as bad as some make him out to be. I have met him on several occaisions. He has taken some stands that weren't popular with the liberal crowd, and some that weren't popular with the conservative crowd also. His "Moral Majority" project in the 70's / 80's made a great impact for the good in this country.

Harvest smears anti-reformed theology venom all over a wonderful thread. I am disappointed.

Do appreciate all who shared YOUR heroes. We have a great heritage! [IMG]

The importance of contex is here demonstrated. It should be noted, before that thread ended, what I was saying came to light, and the person to whom it was said, and I, came to terms, and I offered my full and unconditioned support for their ministry in Canada. God bless them fully.

Now, what I was trying to drive home was this. Whenever we go away from our country to minister, we must leave our country behind, lest all the misgivings or ill thoughts that others may have about us, run interference with our ministry. In other words, focus on ministry and not nationality.

God bless all those who carry the gospel to ALL the parts of the earth.

Cheers,

Jim

PS. Dr. DrBob. Not to take away from this delightful thread. It is nice to hear the affectionate praise of those who preach the gospel.

I am amazed at how God used W.F. Albright. It amazes me each time I think about God has equipped him with such intellect and the doors he has opened for so many.

I have just read 6 pages of Baptist heroes, and I realize I only recognize 4 names.
Pat Robertson, Bill Clinton, Martin Luther King, Jerry Falwell. (and a couple of others that lived before 1900).

Regarding MLK, how can we call a man who is a confirmed adulterer and fornicator (See Ralph Abernathy's "The Walls Came Tumbling Down"--Abernathy, of course, was a close associate who was with MLK when he was killed) a Baptist hero?

1Co 5:9-13 "I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world. But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within? But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person."

Galatians 5:19-21 "Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."

I don't know that I agree with this statement. Billy Graham comes to mind....he has an amazing ability to present the gospel and for people to respond. No doubt God has worked through his popularity. </font>
You have made my point.

There has been enough said about this compromiser. If he preached against infant baptism, the sacraments, etc. he wouldn't be nearly as popular. It isn't always what one says, but what one doesn't say that makes one a compromiser.
</font>
Billy Graham's giftedness is evangelism. Anyone who does evangelism knows well that you do not get people to listen by blasting what they view as credible and believe. If one reads and studies scripture they will see that Jesus uses what the person considers credible to talk with them. When Jesus talked with the Sadducess he used only the Torah and with the Pharisees he used the entire OT. So would any other person do the same thing who expects people to listen and hear God's word.

Even Jesus never preached against a number of current practices in His day.

How would you win others to Christ by preaching against those things you suggested?

Proverbs 11:30, "The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls."

Hey Jimm1999, down here in the United States we are getting missionairies from Korea, the continent of Africa, and from Latin America.I would'nt be surprized to here about Canadien missionairies being sent to us down here.I think God takes missionairies from everywhere and sends them where He wants them. God bless all who follow His direction.

Hello.

It seems you have an ecumenical disdain for the list. Please explain without the the laughing icons.

This is a discussion forum, not a debate one. Folks have entered their opinions and they should be respected, even if they're wrong.

My opinion was expressed without debate rsr. Weren't there some "negative opinions" expressed by other posters about the Baptist Heroes listed in this thread?

I understood this to be a discussion about Baptist Heroes.

Since I approach things from a Scriptural viewpoint, I made the "mistake" of assuming that a "Baptist Hero" could only be someone who had a clearcut testimony of being saved and born-again AND who had done something heroic.

Harry Emerson Fosdick was a modernist who rejected the Virgin Birth, The Blood Atonement and anything miraculous in the Bible. Is that heroic?

I cannot recall Martin Luther King EVER giving a clearcut testimony of his conversion to Jesus Christ. Can you?

Was the poster who listed them as Baptist heroes serious or simply baiting us?

rsr - Are you telling me that expressing a negative opinion is not discussion?

Can we not express a negative opinion in a discussion forum you moderate?

Are only positive opinions allowed in your discussions?

I perhaps misspoke. Certainly discussion is allowed, which you would have known if you had bothered to read some of the other threads in forum.

If you think I am being arbitrary, feel free to take it up with the Webmaster or an Administrator.

My point was that — unless you're a teenager — a "laughing" icon is not discussion. You have dismissed other people's comments without any explanation. This may pass for discussion where you come from, but not from where I am.

Your complaint was a bit better. Maybe should have sent it by private message, though.

BTW: I am glad you approach things from a "scriptural viewpoint." I hope that doesn't mean you're implying that those who happen to disagree with you do not.
