John R. Rice and the KJV

I have several, and its a good thing. They can go for hundreds of dollars on the Internet! Hmm. A Rice Reference Bible signed by Biden's special pen?? The value would go way down.... Confused

John R. Rice and the KJV

Thanks for the kind words. I agree!

John R. Rice and the KJV

The other thread was closed where this was mentioned. John R. Rice was not KJV-Only. He did use the old ASV for study, but he always preached from the KJV. Sometimes he would refer to the Greek, Hebrew, or ASV in his writings. He thought Peter Ruckman was a "nut" (his word), and said as much...

Do You Know the Baptist Distinctives?

I get the "Heinz 57" thing, believe me! Don't have much time to say more--the wife is about to pick me up. But I'll check out the Rice thing if I can find it.

Do You Know the Baptist Distinctives?

I recently took a DMin course on Baptist Polity. The textbook was Theologians of the Baptist Tradition, ed. by Timothy George and David S. Dockery (Broadman and Holman, 2001). I happily recommend this to anyone interested in the subject of this thread.

Do You Know the Baptist Distinctives?

Actually, 8 is the longest list I've ever seen! Not usually called a Baptist distinctive. To me, elder rule is a departure from the Baptist distinctive of two offices in the local church, pastor and deacon. When a Baptist church adopts elder rule, I begin to doubt their credentials to be...

Do You Know the Baptist Distinctives?

Hmm. Maybe I should have said, "Don't look it up on the Internet or in a book, but just give your own view." :Coffee Dumb me, I didn't think people would be parroting what others thought they were. But I actually did say in the OP: "So, what does it mean to you to be a Baptist? Do you have a...

Do You Know the Baptist Distinctives?

It was said on another thread that Lucifer being Satan was a Baptist teaching. Do you really know what it means to be a Baptist? The basic required beliefs for being a Baptist are called the Baptist Distinctives. I did not learn the Baptist distinctives growing up, not from Sunday School...

    Calvin denied Lucifer is Satan

Actually, it is not a Baptist belief. I just this week taught the Baptist distinctives to one person, and then discussed them with another person. What one believes about Lucifer and Satan has absolutely nothing to do with Baptist doctrine. I've taught Baptist doctrine in two Japanese Bible...

    Calvin denied Lucifer is Satan

I have no trouble saying the King of Babylon in his self glorification exactly describes the activities of Satan (called in English "Lucifer" in many contexts, following the KJV) when he fell. Charles Ryrie, as do many theologians and commentators, considered Lucifer ("Morning Star") in this...

    Mega-Church Vs Small-Church

Here is a list of US megachurches: List of megachurches in the United States - Wikipedia Many of these are Charismatic, which means they are doing great harm on the mission fields of the world. I have been to Africa to train nationals in Bible translation, and the Charismatics are all over the...

    Mega-Church Vs Small-Church

I was supported for my 33 years in Japan by a megachurch and then about 27 years by another. Not a single pastor or staff member from those churches visited our ministry in Japan. One pastor from a church of about 1000 did, but then he was my uncle. :) Many other individuals visited us, but not...

    Spirit or Ghost?

I completely disagree. Of course Gentiles were saved before then! There was even a name for them: proselyte. One such was "Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch" (Acts 6:3).

    Mega-Church Vs Small-Church

Tonight in our prayer meeting we had three missionaries which we support. One from S. Africa finishing up his furlough, one from Cameroon starting his (I've been there), and one from the Middle East who spoke and informed us about what is happening in Iran (which he knows intimately). I wonder...

    Mega-Church Vs Small-Church

When Jesus preached to 1000s it was technically mass evangelism, and certainly not a mega church. This is not to say I'm against mega churches, but they must: 1. Give the clear and certain Gospel of Christ. I know a mega church in our area where the Gospel is never given. I've talked to people...

    Spirit or Ghost?

We've gotten far away from the OP, but hey, we're having fun, aren't we? ;) I'm reading A Romance of Song and Soul Winning, the biography of Charles Alexander, by Helen Alexander and J. Kennedy MacLean. Alexander was the song leader for J. Wilbur Chapman and the founder of the Pocket Testament...

    ICE

I'm with you on that. Even after Obama the Democratic party has gotten more radical--think "crazy"! Yeah, we always rented, though I had a missionary friend who bought a home. It's complicated. For one thing you have to have a permanent resident visa, hard to get, before you can get a loan...

Just in passing, Robert Heinlein's classic SF book, Starship Troopers, only military veterans were allowed to be citizens! (BTW, don't watch the movie. It's absolutely awful, and massacres the story line of the book.)

Very correct. While in Japan for 33 years, I had to carry an "Alien Registration" ID wherever I went, and the police were empowered to ask me for that ID at any time or place. Our missionary visa had to be renewed promptly every 3 years, or we would be shipped back to the US. And you'd better...

    Refuse To Be Baptized?

I apologize for seeming to ascribe a position to you. I was trying a technique to get an answer, not to ascribe anything. So I phrased it that way. And we're all busy. :Coffee I know I am. Had three visa issues presented to me as the PDSO (in charge of such things) of our college. God bless...
