    Daily Bible Reading Plans

On Christmas day, of 2019 I embarked on yet again, a new Bible reading schedule. It involved reading, on average, seven chapters per day. I fell behind in some of the readings and would try to catch up. But it was always a battle and I felt like I was always trying to meet a deadline instead of...

    The English Standard Version (ESV)

You meant 'cease,' not 'crease,'. No one, or no publishing house forced anything regarding the 1984 edition. Think about this, the TNIV is no longer published. Was this an example of coercion? Why isn't the 1996 edition of the NLT available? Why can't folks secure the 2004 or 2007 editions? Is...

    The English Standard Version (ESV)

The #1 English Bible translation, or perhaps ANY Bible translation in the world, got there because of the English style, faithfulness to the originals, and being a general purpose, all-round Bible. Crossway has done a lot of expensive marketing for the ESV. and it's probably going to hold at a...

    An American Translation

Well, at Rob's behest, here's the NLT with The Beatitudes : God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs. God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted. God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth. God...

    The English Standard Version (ESV)

I got a tremendous laugh out of the above. Oh my imputed righteousness! It reads well to you, does it? Well, if you approve its English style, then the matter is settled.

"The one"? As if one scholar praised the NIV. Many have praised it.

    An American Translation

Matthew 5:3-12 Blessed are those who feel their spiritual need, for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to them! Blessed are the mourners, for they will be consoled! Blessed are the humble-minded, for they will possess the land! Blessed are those who are hungry and thirsty for uprightness, for they...

    The English Standard Version (ESV)

I have spoken out against Ryken before. The sole book I have of his is The Word Of God In English. Rodney J. Decker did a paper called Review Of The English Standard Version. I agree with his insights. "In summary, my conclusion is that Ryken's work is seriously flawed to the point of being...

Well, too bad. Off I go David.

    The English Standard Version (ESV)

The reasons I don't like it were stated above. Plus I have demonstrated my claims hundreds of times in numerous threads. You sound like a Rykenite. I have heard people and pastors stumble over the awkward syntax many times. It's not, contrary to some, "literary and beautiful English." Portions...

You're a writer and yet not familiar with the idiom.

    The English Standard Version (ESV)

It's antiquated English. It's inelegant. It's not in the least natural sounding. It's biblish. It's entirely unnecessary.

    New NASB Update

Now brace yourself MM. I have to agree with you here. It is awkward and clumsy. I am always on the lookout for places in the NIV where things can be worded better. Years ago I spent a lot of time sending in suggestions for the NT. The CBT was actively asking common folks to submit suggestions. I...

    The English Standard Version (ESV)

The ESV is certainly an improvement over any incarnation of the KJV. Nevertheless, though it was published in the 21st century, it does not reflect current English usage. It's a throwback to an earlier time.
