Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Chapter 6: The Witnesses (& another difference in editions) This chapter starts out describing manuscripts (materials and writing styles). Sam Gipp does a rather poor job with these subjects; perhaps I'll write more on that later. But the following is so intellectually dishonest, that I'm not...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Differences in the Second Edition I copied from the online First Edition for my convenience in earlier posts. But there are significant differences from the online edition and my book edition (mostly additions in the Second) and they are not necessarily an improvement. For example, after...

Baptist churches that claim to use the "King James Bible AV 1611"

Exactly right! These kinds of charts must be checked. For example, in the chart the very first entry under NKJV Demotes Jesus Christ is Luke 13:8 which the NKJV changes to "Sir" (KJV has "Lord"). Here is the verse in its context with Jesus speaking (Luke 13:6-8, KJV) -- He spake also this...

KJV Only Folks: What Bible translations should non-English speakers use?

The TR (KJV) agrees with the Critical Text in about 95% of the entire New Testament!

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Here is what Gipp states just a little further in this chapter -- While on the subject of a common language, let me point out that many opponents of the infallibility of the Authorized Version say that if God put a perfect Bible in English, He is also obligated to furnish such a translation in...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

I think you have exposed the polar-opposite position from Gipp. It may well be that what he was insinuating with his statement about Greek manuscripts "translated literally" not being the Word of God was that he believes that God's Word can only be found in the KJV English text. Why would he...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Thanks for the reponse Of course, what you wrote is true. Even if a literal translation becomes incomprehensible in English, wouldn't the words still be the Word of God? If I view a certifiably accurate Hebrew text of Scripture, even though I cannot read and understand it myself, I would...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Chapter 4: 100 Years War cont'd Most fundamentalists today vehemently reject the thought that God has preserved His words in English. We have "the Bible" they say, but it isn't in any one English version. Most fundamentalists never truly realize the weight of their statements when they say...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Chapter 4: 100 Years War Finally, in this chapter Gipp makes some claims about history. Here's one of his claims (my underscore) -- ... Up until the late 1800's there was, generally speaking, only one Bible, the Authorized Version. There had been others, but the translation instituted by King...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Chapter 3: The Ground Rules The third chapter is about 16 pages in length. Here are Gipp's two "Rules" found in this chapter -- 1. It is always to be remembered that the Bible is a spiritual book which God exerted supernatural force to conceive; and it is reasonable to assume that He could...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Chapter 2: Where Do We Go From Here? The second chapter of UHotB is even shorter than the first. It includes a brief account of Mr. Gipp's conversion experience. There is really no Bible history covered in this chapter. My only comment now concerning this chapter substantiates my earlier gripe...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

Chapter 1: Time Trip! Gipp's first chapter is a brief 7-page fictional account (which probably has no place in a "history" book) to 'prove' the existence of God through the observation of the complex world ("Was it created by accidents?"). There isn't anything in this chapter that is really...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

I want to include here a snip from the beginning of the Introduction of Gipp's UHotB so that the extreme irony of it can be appreciated later. The Introduction was written by David Otis Fuller (my underscore) -- There are just two kinds of Christians. (Are all saved or not? We cannot tell; only...

Book Review: Understandable History of the Bible

I enjoy reading about the history of Bible, and I own several books on the topic. A couple of years ago I was able to obtain a copy of Dr. Samuel Gipp's Understandable History of the Bible (1987) at a very low price. I was aware of Mr. Gipp's KJVO position, but I was willing to read his book...

    Beyond the Apocrypha?

Yes, of course. It seems the 1610 Douay-Rheims also included these apocryphal books. Didn't the articles coming out of Trent mean anything?

    The Amplified Bible

I own and have read the AMP-NT. I didn't find it to be a smooth read (the 'expansions' interupt the flow and are distracting). I don't have much use for it since many other sources (commentary, lexicons, dictionaries) fulfill the same functions only better.

    Beyond the Apocrypha?

The AV1611 in a separate section from the OT and NT included the deuterocanonical books and additions that were made official by the Roman Catholic church at Trent (1546); but why did it also include these three other apocrypha works: 1 & 2 Esdras (aka 3 & 4 Esdras) and the Prayer of Manasses?

    The NASB

Actually, the JW translators show a great deal of understanding in the NWT; you have to know what you are doning to get the results you want (it was no accident).

Are you KJV Only? TR Only? Which versions of these is the ONE?

Not so. For example, there is a generous amount of scholarship (if you care enough to search for it) on the biblical citations found in Shakespeare and they are NOT exclusively from the Geneva.

Are you KJV Only? TR Only? Which versions of these is the ONE?

Let me explain the parable of automobiles: the modern conveniences and safety features are the 400 years of additional biblical and historical scholarship from archeological finds and additional manuscript discoveries (which lead to increased insight into the ancient languages).
