Because you haven't even grasped the point being made: suppose the armed people in the audience had fired back: how long would it have taken it to degenerate into a complete free for all with firearms going off right left and centre even before the police showed up? And when they did, how are...

Not the point: the fear was the inability to distinguish a good shooter and a bad one. There were no civilian good shooters and none were shot by the police by mistake

More deflection. You want to talk about alcohol in the UK, start a thread on it but don't keep derailing this one.

Yes. The police/ SWAT team. As I've said, no objection with them being armed. No armed civilians were responsible for stopping the shooter

Thanks for agreeing with my point then

So, I repeat: a good guy with a gun there would not have stopped the bad guy with the gun

s Sorry, this the other article I thought had loaded up: 'It was hysteria. People were trampled': panic as Las Vegas gunman opened fire "I didn't want to be mistaken for a bad guy." Either which way, the accounts give the lie to the myth that the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good...

Not ridiculous. Citation as requested: Why the Las Vegas Shooting Was a Security Agency’s Nightmare And here's a good account: Follow the latest developments from the Las Vegas shooting live

    Why?

One of the points that emerged from.the Vegas shooting is that, whilst several in the crowd were armed, they were afraid to shoot at the perpetrator lest they be thought by the police to be the perps themselves: the words "you can tell the good guys with a gun from the bad guys with a gun" trip...

Strange also that some advocate an 18th century solution to a 21st century problem whilst treating it as a sacred cow on the way. We already have security scanners in some schools in the inner city in particular...but they are aimed at knife crime which is a problem in some quarters here.

I agree. But that doesn't mean we should just sit on our hands and do nothing, as some are advocating here

23 theft related (not all in someone's home) in the latest year for which we have stats. Source: Homicide - Office for National Statistics. That's less than the death toll at Sandy Hook (just one school shooting)

Largely self inflicted...unlike the 17 who died last week. Fix that and then you ca complain about being lectured...until then the comparison is inaccurate

Democracy failed in Weimar Germany the moment it switched to Presidential government in 1930 ie three years before Hitler. Apples and oranges. [ETA And the example of Eastern Europe post WWII shows it wouldn't have made any difference in the long term: the government tends to win because their...

    Why?

Yes we have a problem there. The difference is that we acknowledge this and are making steps to fix it. You don't even acknowledge that the 2nd Amendment has created a problem. Your stance seems to be to hand-wring on the airlines saying "well we can't fix all of the problems so let's not fix any."
  20. M

    Why?

The differnce is that we made a decision through our elected representatives in Parliament some 20 or so years ago that we were no longer prepared to sacrifice our children (and our citizens generally on the altar of the pursuit of some spurious 'human right'; that their right to life trumped...
