Does repentance come from God or People?

You can't discuss the concept of God granting repentance in a debate about Calvinism's DoGs without discussing the concept if "irresistibility." Anyone who thinks you can is not aware of the issues.

Does repentance come from God or People?

We all agree on what God will do to His people, we are debating about how one become His people... I think Paul gives us a glimpse of that in his summary remarks in Romans 9: "the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; 31 but Israel, who...

    Armenian Baptists?

Yet men are born unable to hear that appeal unless first made able by God, according to your view, thus making such an appeal appear disingenuous at best. It would be like Noah being angry at the sin of his generation and putting a drug in their drinking water making deaf to his words and...

Does repentance come from God or People?

Why? Because in your system it is "irresistible" which is why I asked why you refer to it being "allowed" or "granted?" If a doctor does heart surgery to save the life of a car accident victim does he say "I granted or allowed him to have a new heart?" That doesn't make sense. Why speak of...

Calvinism Critiqued by a Former Calvinist

This article could have been written by me because it is so reflective of my own experience. Thanks for posting it.

Does repentance come from God or People?

 Agreed, but is that "work of the Spirit" irresistible? If so, why even refer to it being "granted" or "allowed" as if we are being given the ability to respond? Why not call it "effectually applied" or something of that sort so as to be consistent with your dogma?

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

Who has made that argument? I'm not denying that some might wrongly argue this point, but it appears to me that the charge being brought has more to do with God's inviting and making appeals to people who He decreed to be born totally unable to respond due to the Fall of Adam. We are talking...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

Having been a Calvinist for a long time, I will say this assessment is true. Many from the 'non-cal' side don't see things from the Calvinistic perspective. However, it has been my experience as well that many Calvinists don't see things correctly from the scholarly non-calvinistic...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

We agree with this verse. The question is: How does God make his mysterious spiritual truths known to man? In other words, what means has God chosen to make His mysteries known to man? 1. A supernatural internal and irresistible working by which the mind just knows spiritual mysteries. OR...

    Armenian Baptists?

See, there is the problem. The good news of this blood is sent to all mankind to make the appeal for them to be reconciled. Your view exalts those who reject it by giving them an excuse for their unbelief and rejection of the blood. In your view, they reject because they were born that way...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

I suppose you'd say that about all analogies that reflect your dogma in a negative light, regardless of how accurate of a reflection it is. How is the analogy not a correct representation of your view? I agree with that statement, but it is untrue of your doctrine because the offer isn't...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

Actually JHB is one of the few mainstream Calvinists on this board who haven't fallen into the extreme/hyper camp, IMO. He represents what we see taught by men like MacArthur, Piper and Sproul, for the most part, IMO. They are just so rare around here that he doesn't seem like a "Calvinist,"...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

It's actually worse than that. God not only commands repentance, the scripture clearly shows that God "makes an appeal for all men to be reconciled." It reveals God "holding out his hands" and "longing to gather unbelievers" and "desiring all to come to faith and repentance," all of which fly...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

Let me ask you. Do you believe the "sodomite" had a choice, or do you believe he was born to be gay and couldn't have chosen otherwise? Doesn't that answer make a difference regarding the level of guilt most would place upon the individual? Personally, I think they have a chose thus when...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

I'm talking about man's excuse for unbelief, which is ultimately why he is condemned. He rejects God's universal appeal "to be reconciled to God" for a reason. The reason is because he was born unable to willingly do otherwise (according to Calvinists) thus giving man the perfect excuse...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

I didn't blame God for sin. I simply asked if there is any better excuse for unbelief than the one given by Calvinistic dogma? I submit there is not. What better excuse for unbelief is there than, "I was born unable to believe?" That view exalts the view of man because it makes it appear...

just How Do the DoG Provide "sinner an excuse?"

What better excuse for unbelief is there than this: "God was against me from the foundation of the earth. He didn't love me like he did those who are saved and he didn't grant me the ability to willingly believe His truth." Can anyone think of a better excuse than that?
